Richard MacDonald, a Leawood graduate student who lived in South Africa until he was 14, told the committee he thought South African blacks were against divestment because it would hurt an already crippled economy. "I hate the South African system, probably with far more reason than anyone else in this room," he said. "But there are two sides to every problem. "I have no alternative to divestment, but no one else does either and that's the problem." James Seaver, professor of history and representative of the American Association of University Professors, said his organization unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday urging the Endowment Association to divest.
