16 University Daily Kansan Thursday, Jan. 30, 1986 Sports Eagles owner hires the 'next Lombardi' PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Eagles owner Norman Braman has high expectations for his new coach, former Chicago Bears defensive genius Buddy Ryan. "He's an individual I honestly expect to be the next Vince Lombardi in the National Football League," Braman said of Ryan, who was named Eagles' coach yesterday. Braman has been known to expect a lot from his football team — he expected this year's 7-9 squad to be a playoff contender — but his goals appear to be as lofty as Ryan's own, although Ryan was not ready to classify himself as a genius like Lombardi. "I've been to three Super Bowls with three different ball clubs and we plan to go with a fourth," said Ryan, who was with the New York Jets, the Minnesota Vikings and the Bears when they appeared in the NFL's climactic game. Ryan, the architect of the swarming Chicago Bears" defense, which allowed only 10 points in three playoff games, said that he would bring his "46 defense" to Philadelphia and that he expected to be as successful with it as he was with the Bears. The "46 defense" shut out the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams during the playoffs and held the New England Patriots to 10 points in the Bears Super Bowl victory. Ryan, whose Eagles face a schedule this year' featuring 10 teams that won at least 10 games last year, said he did not take losing well. "In this business, losers are weeded out and I don't want to get in that category," he said. Ryan's aggressiveness was praised by both Braman and Eagles general manager Harry Gamble, who said Ryan's approach to the game was the main reason he was selected for the job. At the news conference where he was introduced, Ryan showed only a few flashes of the acerbic personality that has characterized him. When asked what Bears coach Mike Difka had said to him when he announced his resignation, Ryan replied, "Mike who?" but quickly added that Mike was a good man who had wished Ryan well. Braman said although Jim Mora, Miami assistant coach David Shula and Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Tony Dungy were all real candidates, he considered Ryan first as his next possible coach Dec. 1, before Marion Campbell even was fired. the next two weeks. The remaining Eagles assistants would be among those considered for the jobs. Ryan said he hoped to finish assembling his coaching staff within In his three seasons as Eagles coach, Campbell compiled records of 3-6, 6-9-1, and 6-9 before he was fired with one week left in the regular season. comprehensive health associates health • free pregnancy tests associates • abortion services/ counseling • gynecology • contraception Overland Park, KS / 913-345-1400 THE CASTLE TEA ROOM KWALITY COMICS SCIENCE FICTION COMIC BOOKS • GAMES 1111 Massachusetts 843-7239 THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE KINKO'S.
