14 Wednesday, July 29, 1987/Kansan Summer Weekly Reagan urges U.S. conference to develop superconductivity WASHINGTON (AP) — President Reagan yesterday urged scientific and business interests to maintain U.S. leadership in the promising field of superconductivity, saying, "It's our business to discover ways to turn our dreams into history as quickly as possible." In a speech to a government conference to help develop a national game plan for commercially exploiting superconductivity, Reagan said, "Science tells us the breakthroughs in superconductivity bring us to the threshold of a new age. It is our task at this conference to herald in that new age with a rush." Superconductivity is the process by which electricity is conducted with no loss of energy to resistance. High-temperature superconductors have become a symbol of international economic competitiveness. Superconductivity could one day lead to better computers, magnetically-levitated trains, smaller electric motors, and more efficient generation and transmission of electrical power. The conference, sponsored by the White House and the Energy Department, was planned to bring together business leaders with officials and scientists from government, universities and laboratories. The Reagan administration has given priority to U.S. development and exploitation of the new technology, as indicated by the president's appearance at the conference. And in yesterday's speech, the president said there was room for a government role in the development of superconductivity technology. "Now I have to confess that I'm one of those people who, when the government offers to help, gets very nervous," he said. "This is not to say the government doesn't have an important role, especially at the basic research level." William R. Graham Jr., the president's science adviser, said the administration was planning a multi-point program to speed superconductors out of the lab and into commercial products before European and Japanese economic rivals do. At a White House briefing in advance of Reagan's speech, Graham said the discovery and development of superconductivity research "will rival the transistor, the integrated circuit and other scientific breakthroughs." Electric utilities have an interest in superconductivity because much electricity is lost to resistance during distribution, before the energy reaches customers. The loss to the nation's utilities is estimated at 10 to 15 percent. The two-day conference, expected to draw more than 1,000 participants, has stirred controversy because of an administration decision to bar foreign officials and businessmen. However, the meeting is open to domestic and foreign news media coverage. WICHITA (AP) - A lawyer representing a woman seeking child support from a Roman Catholic priest is threatening to sue Pope John Paul II and other church officials and entities, according to a story published by The Wichita Eagle-Beacon. Lawyer threatens Pope with lawsuit over priest with 3-year-old child Lyle Britt of Wichita represents Margaret Ann Cameron, 33, a Wichita woman who won a 1984 paternity suit against Father Paul Francis Ziegler. She has a developmentally disabled 3-year-old child, Evonne, who Sedwick County District Judge Montie Deer ruled was fathered by Ziegler. Cameron was granted $1,000 a month child support, and Ziegler also was ordered to pay Evonne's medical bills and legal fees. He has been paying $100 a month in child support through the state Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. Cameron gets $50 of that because she is receiving Cameron said Zieglier assured her in 1983 that if she became pregnant, it would be God's sign for him to leave the priesthood and marry her. Evenne was born a year later. other SRS assistance. Cameron also could not be reached. Faced with the reality of fatherhood, "He says, 'I think I've made a mistake and goodbye,'" Cameron said. When Pope John Paul II visits Texas in September, Britt says he may try to serve the pontiff with a civil suit seeking damages in connection with the conduct of Ziegler and the church. There is disagreement about whether a priest can be held accountable for his actions and whether the church legally is responsible for what a priest does. Britt says the answer to both questions is, "Absolutely." Technically, Ziegler could be liable for $260,000 or 18 years of child support and medical bills for the child. A priest's annual salary is $5,000. Britt is trying to force the church, which once offered Cameron $10,000 before the child was born, to absorb Ziegler's debt, the Eagle-Beacon said. Church lawyers content the church is not the priest's employer and is not liable in any way for what he does off duty. Cameron and Ziegler met in the summer of 1982 at St. Joseph's church in Wichita. Ziegler was substituting for vacationing priests. Ziegler was a newly ordained priest, and Cameron was unemployed. COUPONS Exp.
