Kansan Summer Weekly/Wednesday, July 29, 1987 11 Insect bites bothersome, cause illness By STORMY WYLIE Staff writer Some KU students have been bugged by bugs this summer. Jody Woods, nurse practitioner at Watkins Hospital, said last week that one reason many KU students have felt lousy this summer was because of bites and stings from a variety of insects — mosquitoes, ticks, wasps, bees, fleas, chiggers, even brown spiders. "We haven't had too many of the normal summer accidents from sports, fishing or swimming, but we have noticed several cases of insect bites." Woods said. "It looks like the flu, but sometimes when the students come in all swelled up, you swear it is something else." Several students have come to the hospital with flu symptoms, such as low-grade fevers, nausea, and light-headedness. However, doctors noticed wells on their bodies, especially around ankles and legs, which were inspected in intact bites as the possible source of the symptoms, Woods said. Students with insect bites generally are treated the same as those with the flu, with aspirin and antibiotics. Students usually recover within 24 hours, Woods said. Lawrence McGee, staff physician at Watkins, said mosquitoes in this part of the country normally did not carry disease. More people are apt to have allergic reactions to wasp or bee stings and tick or spider bites. saliva prevents the blood from clotting and irritates the skin, said Ernie May, a graduate student at the KU Entomology Museum. But, Woods said, many students also could have allergic reactions to metals. Two cases of brown spider bites were reported at Wakkins this summer. Woods said that was an unusual number for this time of year. More people are bitten in the fall when they are cleaning out closets, garages, sheds and other places, she said. The itching caused by mosquito bites comes from the saliva that mosquitos inject into the skin. The person's skin tissue. In some severe cases, skin grafts are needed to replace dead skin. People's reactions to spider bites depended on their immune systems and their sensitivity to venom. Woods said. Neither of the two KU students that have been treated for spider bites required skin grafts. Woods said. The recluse brown spider injects a poison that destroys the fat in a When treating a spider bite, ice is applied to the bite for the first five to 10 minutes. This cuts down the spread of allergic reaction, McGee said. The person is also given topical antibiotics or steroids to reduce secondary infection, and in some cases, the person is injected with systemic steroids around the bite to prevent an allergic reaction, McGee said. Union renovations cause inconveniences By CARLA PATINO Staff writer Customers who eat at the Kansas Union lately have been served side orders of noise, smoke, less space and dust along with their lunches. The renovations at the Union have created several inconveniences for customers as well as for food service workers. This summer, the cafeteria on the third floor of the Union is closed for renovation, and the Big Eight Deli/ Snack Bar is closed for the summer. Though the Hawk's Nest Cafeteria and the Prairie Room Soup and Salad Bar still are open, some students avoid them. Katia Silva, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, graduate student, said she used to have lunch at the Union every day before the renovations began. She recently tried her luck at the Hawk's Nest and the Prairie Room. "The noise and the dust are unbearable," she said. "There are not many choices as far as food is concerned either." Now she eats at Wesco Cafeteria. James Long, director of the Union, said that while renovations continued, the total dining capacity of the Union would be about 200 people fewer than the normal! 900. But, Long said, it doesn't appear that the number of Union dining customers has decreased drastically. Kay Oshel, a cashier at the Wescoe cafeteria, said she has noticed more customers at Wescoe. "We have seen a lot of different faces around here." Oshel said. "Some people complain about the noise and the mess at the Union." Marta Brow, Lawrence senior, has a different reason for not eating at the Union. She said the only place with good food is downstairs, at the Hawk's Nest, and there it usually is crowded and full of cigarette smoke. "People don't comply with the non-smoking section, and it is very irritating when you are allergic to smoke," she said. "The Union is close by and, on the whole, the food is pretty good," she said. After the renovations, all dining areas at the Union will be on the third floor, said Lilly Coults, customer consultant for the Union food services. By January 1988, the Prairie Room, the Hawk's Nest and a new restaurant called the Union Square should be open.
