The Royals, however, got 12 hits off two Orioles hurlers. Left fielder Lonnie Smith accounted for four of those hits, including a solo home run, his first of the season.

Orioles 'first baseman Eddie Murrays' home run in the eighth innings gave the Orioles a 4-3 victory over the Royals. The win extended the Orioles' winning streak to 11. Kansas City had 12 hits to the Orioles eight. Bret Saberhagen, 15-5, took the loss for the Royals.

Third charged in ex-player's death
OTTAWA (AP) — A third person was charged yesterday with second-degree murder in the early Saturday slaying of former Kansas State basketball player Jari Wills in a private club.
Michael E. Hicks, 35, of rural Wellsville, was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of possession of an illegal weapon.

Wills, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native, played basketball for Kansas State from 1978-80. Wills also played professional basketball in France
and the Middle East after leaving Kansas State.
Franklin County Attorney Wendell Barker cited a Kansas aiding and abetting clause in charging Hicks and the Burgesses. Barker said members of the motorcycle club were after Wills because he had broken up a fight involving bikers at the club where he worked as a bouncer last October.
Barker said four or five men attacked Wills as he entered a bar Saturday, and he was stabbed in the heart in the ensuing scuffle.
KU students teach for summer jobs

For many KU students, Lawrence Parks and Recreation is a good place to get a summer job. The city department offers classes on everything from martial arts to ballet and KU students are involved in almost everything.
Kathy Fode, program manager for parks and recreation, says that KU students often teach their classes because of their previous training. In order to teach a class for parks and recreation, an instructor must be certified in that field.
For example, a person teaching swimming lessons must have a Water Safety Instruction Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
Cyndi Beggs, Liberty, Mo. senior, has been a certified lifeguard at the Lawrence Municipal Pool for four years. The pool is operated by Lawrence Parks and Recreation.
"I needed a summer job. Something that wouldn't carry over to the school year," Beggs said, "I'd be in the sun anyway." Beggs also said she enjoys working for the pool because she likes kids and most of the pool's clientel are children.
The pool is a popular place for students to work summers because of the hours says Angie Diekler, 1985 KU graduate and seven-year employee at the pool. Because school is in session in the morning, and the pool is full, students are able to put in a 40 hour work week and still go to school.
"It's fairly steady. We always have KU students." Diecker said.
Last September, parks and recreation joined forces with KU to increase their gymnastics program. KU Gymnastics coordinator and Lawrence Municipal Pool Manager, Bob Lockwood, says that since the merge, involvement in the program has
increased from about 100 participants to 500 participants at its peak last school year.
About nine classes are offered and are categorized by age and skill level.
Michelle Deal, KU student and gymnastics instructor, says that she has enjoyed working for parks and recreation and thinks the experience is good for the children she teaches. Deal has been a gymnastics instructor at KU for two years.
"When I first moved here, I didn't think I'd be able to teach," Deal said, "but it's worked out really well with my schedule.
Lockwood has been the Lawrence Municipal Pool Manager since it opened in 1968 and has seen many KU students come and go.
"It's a good steady job for kids in that age group," Lockwood said.
