Kansan Summer Weekly/Wednesday, July 29, 1987 5 Squadron displays precision air skills; over 556,000 attend 2-day exhibition By KEITH ROBISON Staff writer They looked like special effects from a science fiction movie. In fact, when George Lucas created Luke Skywalker's spaceship dogfight scenes for the movie, Star Wars, he could have stolen them from the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron. The Blue Angels, Navy and Marine pilots, were the main feature at "Operation Handshake," an air show and open house held last weekend at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Kansas City, Mo., where they performed precision air maneuvers. Base spokesman Bill Barber said more than 556,000 people attended the two-day event. Pat Walsh, a Blue Angels pilot who has been with the squadron since October 1984, said the Blue Angels flew from St. Louis to the base in less than 20 minutes. Walsh said the squadron traveled and flew in air shows 300 days of the year. "Home? What's home? We get two weeks off in the middle of November and start back up in December. "It itkes a while to get used to walking again." Walsh said as he walked away from his plane, one of six F/A its used by the Blue Angels. He said "the Blues" — six pilots and one narrator — were a close drama. "It's kind of like a family. We have to be close to do what we do and to travel and live together." He said that the maneuvers "the Blues" used in their demonstration were taken from real combat man-users. "This is about the same, but com bat situations would be much higher and faster and never that close together. We go slower and lower for the crowd's sake." This year's competition for a spot with the team was intense, Walsh said. "Forty people applied for next year and we picked four. That really speaks for your aviation skills when you get picked," he said. Walsh is leaving the Blue Angels in November to serve on an aircraft carrier with an F-18 squadron. He said he was looking forward to a little boredom. Kathy Scanlon, senior chief and Navy recruiter in Lawrence, said interest in becoming a Navy pilot had increased since the release of the movie Top Gun. "They'll call and say they want to be a pilot. They think they can sign something and just go jump into a plane. It's not that easy." Scanlon said that the Navy required prospective pilots to have four years of college with a grade point average of at least 3.0, in addition to the Navy flight training. "It's at least two years before they'll even be able to see the inside of a cockpit. That usually discourages most people. "They're sticky with that 3.0," she said. "They don't want any dummies." At the demonstration, two Blue Angel solo pilots reached speeds up to 1,000 mph in a collision-effect maneuver just a few feet off the ground. They flew towards each other in a line. Each second of navigational error throws the plane off course one-eighth of a mile. ABOVE: Lt. Wayne Molnar, one of the pilots on the Blue Angels team, waits for his plane to be refueled. Black leader to address INROADS session Friday in Lawrence Campus editor Saturday The chairman of the black caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives will be the keynote speaker Friday morning at the INROADS National Training Institute in Lawrence. The chairman, Walter Fauntroy, will speak to about 2,500 interns from across the nation who are involved in INROADS, a career development program for minorities in the business and industry fields. Doris Danickon, INROADS public relations director, said Monday. The institute will run from Thursday to As a representative of the District of Columbia, which is not a state, Fauntroy is a non-voting member of the House, said Peg Shaw, public relations associate. Vice President George Bush originally was asked to be the keynote speaker at the institute, but scheduling problems prevented him from appearing, Danielson said. Fauntroy will discuss future global issues facing minorities, she said. Other speakers scheduled to appear include William C. Parker, vice president on minority affairs at the university of Kentucky, Lexington; the Samuel Betanics, professor of sociology at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago; and Bebe Moore Campbell, author of Successful Women, Angry Men. The agenda for the institute includes panel discussions, audio-visual presentations and a recognition banquet and barbecue cookout. The purpose of the training institute, Danielson said, is to allow the interns to meet as one collective body, share experiences and receive intensive training to prepare them for community and corporate leadership. "It's quite a competitive program," Danielson said. "INROADS makes it just like it is in the real world. INROADS helps minority students with high academic and community achievements find internships with corporations that sponsor the interns through college. The interns work in the corporations during the summer and take business and commerce-related courses during the school year. academic performance, community service, on-the-job performance and participation in INROADS activities," she said. Any student who failed to meet those standards could be removed from the program. "During the internship, the student must maintain high standards in The average annual fee for one intern is $2,200. Danielson said. Sponsoring corporations pay the interns' fees. More than 1,000 students have graduated from INROAD nationwide since the program started in 1970, and about 63 students have graduated from KU, said Stan Johnson, managing director of the Kansas City INROADS affiliate office INROADS interns have been attending KU since 1979. Johnson said, and most of the interns have been recruited from the Kansas City area and Topeka. Twenty-two students at KU now are with the INROADS program. INROADS is sponsoring a concurrent conference for alumni of the program on the campus, Johnson said. About 300 to 500 alumni are expected to attend this weekend. Lawrence was chosen as the site for the national institute because of its central location.
