Commission agrees to restrict skateboarders

The Lawrence City Commission last night agreed, at the request of Mayor Mayer Amyx, to draft an ordinance stating that skateboards could not be ridden on downtown Massachusetts Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week and until 8 p.m. Thursday.

"I see a real conflict between pedestrians and skaters, and we must have some guidelines and set times that people can skate," he said.
Lawrence teen-ager Patty Jacobs, 1515 New Hampshire St., spoke in support of downtown skaters. "I have never seen anyone on a skateboard or in skateboards aren't dangerous to anyone except who's on them," she said.
"There's a skating rink four miles out of town, and we have no transportation. We just want to skate. It's a big sport that gives lots of exercise
"Skateboarding is allowed on Wesco Beach at KU, but sometimes people get upset. I know some skaters run into people, but it's not fair
to those of us who don't to deny us a place to skate."
Commissioner Bob Schumm asked who would be responsible if a customer got hit while walking out the door of his restaurant, Buffalo Bob's Smokehouse. 719 Massachusetts St. City Manager Buford Watson said that in this situation he would be to keep this situation would be to keep his restaurant in good condition.
"If no problem has been made known, you can deny liability, but remember, it's a jury who decides liability," Watson said.
In other business, the commission voted unanimously to reduce the speed limit on north Indiana Street and erect a stop sign at the corner of Indiana and Fourth streets.
Now the speed limit on Indiana Street from Third to Sixth streets is 30 mph. The commission voted to reduce that speed limit to 20 mph.
Also last night, the commission approved an ordinance requiring property owners to give public notice of applications for demolition permits and to wait 30 days after the applications before beginning demolitions. The ordinance was approved I-1.
