6 Wednesday, July 22, 1987/Kansan Summer Weekly 1.5 Continued from p. 1 accepted when I was 16. It was published when I was 17. I got paid for it when I was 18." he said. "It was published in the October 1937 issue of a magazine called Amazing Stories. In October of 1887, 50 years later, they're going to reprint it. It's a dreadfully treacly story. "I was rejected widely for a long time. When Amazing Stories bought that story, I had 10 or 12 stories rejected." Pohl said discussions at the conference centered on the science fiction writer's role in the world. "This morning, we have been talking about where science fiction was to bring it to where it is today," he said. Pohl said the man for whom the conference was named had influenced the direction of science fiction greatly. "John W. Campbell was the magazine writer. He was very influential in shaping the careers of some of the best known science fiction writers in the world, like Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. "I stole all of his ideas as best I could," he said. "I can always find a science fiction reader who is happy to show me around and explain what is going on, so I don't have to spend much time doing research when I write. The research comes from my hobby." Campbell was the editor of the *Action magazine, now known as Amy* "I'm interested in the future, and I'm interested in the process of change. Science fiction is the literature of change. Science is my spectator sport. I like it better than the Super Bowl. I like to go where the research is going on — MIT, Cape Kennedy," he said. Although Pohl didn't receive much of a formal education, he said education was more important now than when he began his career. "At 19, with dumb luck and no virtue at all on my part, I fell into an editing job at a couple of magazines. "If I went into one of those offices now with less than a master's degree, they'd laugh at me," he said. "One thing I always like to do as an editor is to discover a new writer and take pride in their subsequent careers. I think I published Bradbury's first story," he said. "The happiest people I know are people that have somehow converted their hobbies into careers. "I would probably pay to get published. He lives in Palatine, Ill., where his wife teaches college English. "It's not to say that it's not hard, demanding, sometimes very frustrating work. You have to impose discipline on yourself. I make myself write four pages every day. Every day of my life I deface four clean pieces of paper." "The best thing about my life is that I hardly ever do anything I don't want to do, and people give me money for it. Among the books he has written, Pohl said his favorite was Gateway, written in 1977. His latest book, Chernobyl, will be released Sept. 1. "Just like teachers learn more than students, I think editors learn more than writers. It teaches you a He said Chernobyl was a non-fiction book about the nuclear accident in the Soviet Union and the accident's ramifications for the people involved and the whole society.
