His job was to remove waste from the number 7 and 8 boilers at the KU power plant. He also helped many out-of-towers find the University. He did these chores unfailingly, seven days a week. He had one vice, however; he smoked quite a bit. . . like a chimney, in fact. But University officials didn't need him anymore, so they hired a team of hit men to rub him out. As of yesterday, about 40 feet of the smokestack had been torn down, Perkins said, but as the stack gets fuller, it will still be ash.
