His job was to remove waste from the number 7 and 8 boilers at the KU power plant. He also helped many out-of-towers for the University. He did these chores unfailingly, seven days a week. Perkins said that the two boilers receiving new smokestacks should be operable by Oct.15,depending on the weather. Until then, the two boilers now on line should have no problems handling the work load this summer and fall, he said. "One of the boilers can handle most of the summer heat. In winter, however, we'll have both of them up to full operational capabilities, and sometimes a third," he said. Workers are proceeding by digging out 4-feet-square sections of the smokestack, cutting reinforcing steel bars imbedded in the concrete, then letting the sections fall into the smokestack, Perkins said. The rubble is being dumped at the KU landfill west of Iowa Street. As of yesterday, about 40 feet of the smokestack had been torn down, Perkins said, but as the stack gets New vice chancellor selected By CARLA PATINO For the first time, a woman will be the executive vice chancellor for the University of Kansas Lawrence campus.
