University Daily Kansan / Friday, December 5, 1986 7 Creativity pays off for engineers By PAMELA SPINGLER Staff writer An engineering student can get as much as $30,000 a year for graduate research from a new grant program from the National Science Foundation. The program. "Creativity Awards in Graduate Engineering," is based on creative ideas more than on academic achievement, according to the foundation. It is designed to make graduate research more appealing to engineering undergraduates and recent graduates nationwide. Carl Locke, dean of engineering, said he became aware of the prog- mum last month. The program "It's sometimes difficult to find support at this level," he said yesterday. The grant, which can be renewed twice, would pay for tuition, fees and student's research costs. It also allows students almost $1,000 a month for living expenses. "The competition is going to be fierce." Locke said. "For the 30 grants given, they should have at least $1 million and hundred applications if not, more." would help students pay bills while dedicating their time to research, he said. the selection committee can evaluate its technical merit. Other factors in the selection process include three letters of recommendation and undergraduate training and education. Students must submit to the foundation a letter that describes the proposed research in detail so The program is open to any prospective graduate student in engineering who is a U.S. citizen. Engineering students already in graduate school are not eligible for the award. Normally, NSF graduate awards are based on academic achievement, but the creativity awards will encourage students toward more creative research ideas, the NSF said.
