For these marriages, you need Goodheart The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA — Valentine's day is no time for a judge named Goodheart to take a day off, even if the annual celebration of love does come on a Sunday. For 12 years, Common Pleas Judge Bernard J. Goodheart has been open his courtroom at noon on Feb. 14 to marry couples seeking that extra special anniversary, and this year won't be any different. Twenty-two couples already have signed up to be married in Goodheart's courtroom, said judicial aide Bill Wurz, adding that the turnout was about normal. "Last year, we had 26 couples on a Saturday." he said. Goodheart began the tradition when a couple could not find a judge to marry them on Valentine's Day. Although he was engaged in a homicide trial, he volunteered to perform the ceremony on his lunch hour, saying he would not be worthy of his name if he refused to help people get married on that special day for lovers. Like so many traditions, Goodheart's matrimonial marathon has grown over the years. Last year, a musical group called the Reading Terminals provided music for the occasion, and they'll be back this year, with Judge Richard B. Klein on drums. Briefs O'CONNOR AT K-STATE: Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will deliver the 78th Landon D'course Feb. 16 in Manhattan. O'Connor will speak in McCain Auditorium on the Kansas State University campus at 10:30 a.m. The topic has not been announced. The "Landon Lectures on Public Issues" series at KSU honors the late Alfred M. Landon, former Kansas governor and the Republican Party's 1936 presidential nominee. The lecture series, which has attracted three U.S. presidents, two vice presidents and other heads of state, offers a forum for the nation's leaders in public affairs to discuss the issues they think are vital to the welfare of the country. Last fall, both U.S. Senator Nancy Landon Kassaeba and Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanchez delivered Landon lectures. FORMER KU PROFESSOR DIES: Ezaar Christian Buehler, 93, a former KU professor of speech and debate coach, died yesterday in Lawrence. Funeral services are pending at Rumsey Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the E.C. Buehler Speech Library in care of either the Kansas University Endowment Association or the funeral home.
