4B SPORTS / FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2010 / THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN / KANSAN.COM NFL Pats defeat Falcons in preseason MCCLATCHY-TRIBUNI New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker (83) makes a reception and is brought down by Atlanta Falcons cornerback Chevis Jackson durino first-quarter action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Thursday. New England defeated Atlanta 28-10. ASSOCIATED PRESS ATLANTA — New England's offense looks just fine, especially with Wes Welker back at receiver. The Falcons' defense appears to need more work. Tom Brady threw for a touchdown, Fred Taylor ran for a score and the Patriots cruised past Atlanta 28-10 in a preseason game Thursday night. Welker, who had 346 catches over the last three years, played for the first time since tearing up his left knee in January during the regular-season finale. Brady got him involved right away, completing passes of 6 and 14 yards on the second and third plays against the Falcons (1-1). New England (2-0) scored on two of its three possessions with the first-team offense. Taylor had a 28-yard run and Brady passed 4 yards to Aaron Hernandez for a touchdown. Atlanta has plenty of weapons on offense, but upgrading the defense is considered the key to challenging Super Bowl champion New Orleans in the NFC South. This wasn't exactly a fair test. Cornerback Dunta Robinson, the team's big free-agent acquisition, missed his second straight preseason game with an aling hamstring. Two other potential starters, cornerback Brian Wilson and tackle Peria Jerry, also sat out. Still, the Patriots had no trouble moving the ball against those who did play for the Falcons. Brady went 10 of 12 for 85 yards, though he did fumble on a hit by Kroy Biermann, New England recovered and Brady got another shot when Chevis Jackson was penalized for knocking down Stephen Gostkowski on a 41-yard field goal attempt that was wide right. Gostkowski apparently worked on his acting skills during the off-season. Jackson dove for the block and came up short of the kicker, who then fell over the Atlanta player while he was sprawled on the Georgia Dome turf. Falcons coach Mike Smith screamed in protest, but Brady and the offense trotted back on the field. Three plays later, Brady fired a pass that got Falcons rookie linebacker Sean Weatherspoon all turned around, allowing Hernandez to make the catch in the back of the end zone while the first-round pick was looking the wrong way. At least Weatherspoon didn't look as bad as Thomas DeCoud, who came up to make a hit on Taylor and was instead sent flying by 296-pound teammate Jonathan Babineaux, trying to assist on the tackle. Taylor bounced outside and untouched the rest of the way for New England's first touchdown. Matt Ryan and the Atlanta offense looked good on the opening possession, picking up three first downs before the drive stalled. Matt Bryant came on to kick a 46-yard field goal that gave the Falcons a short-lived lead. Ryan directed another solid drive before his night was done. Three more first downs again sent the Falcons into New England territory, but this time Bryant pushed a 47-yard attempt wide of the right upright. Ryan was 8 of 13 for 76 yards before giving way to John Parker Wilson, who played the rest of the game. The third-stringer accounted for Atlantas' only TD on a late 19-yard pass to Troy Bergeron after most of the crowd had headed for home. New England backup Brian Hoyer directed a couple of scoring drives in the second half. Sammy Morris scored on a 20-yard run and Rob Gronkowski hauled in a 24-yard TD pass. PHILADELPHIA — Jonathan Sanchez allowed just two hits while pitching into the ninth inning and Buster Posey lined a pair of RBI doubles, leading the San Francisco Giants over the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Thursday. ended the Phillies' four-game win ning string. The Giants averted a sweep in a matchup of NL wild-card contenders. San Francisco stopped its three-game losing streak and Sanchez (9-8) became the first Giants starting pitcher to record a win in 15 games, dating to his victory over Colorado on Aug. 3. No runner reached second base against the lefty, who retired 15 straight after hitting Chase Utley with a pitch in the fourth. Sanchez, who was vying for his first complete game since no-hitting San Diego on July 10, 2009, came out to start the ninth with a 5-0 lead. He gave up a leadoff single to Shane Victorino and was pulled with a 2-0 count on Placido Polanco. Giants avoid sweep in Philadelphia Rielicker Sergio Romo retired Polanco on a fly ball, but Utley singled and Mike Sweeney hit a two-out, two-run double. Giants manager Bruce Bochy then went to closer Brian Wilson, who got Raul Ibanez on a fly ball for his 34th save in 37 opportunities. Victorino had the Phillies' first hit, a hard single up the middle in the third. Pablo Sandoval homered for the Giants, his ninth. MLB The Giants, who had scored three or fewer runs in each of their past five games, jumped on Cole Hamels (7-10) for three first-inning runs. Freddy Sanchez singled and scored on the first of Posey's doubles. The Giants' rookie is 11-for-25 (444) in his last six games. Jose Guillen and Juan Uribe each had RBI singles later in that inning. Hamels had received eight runs of support in his previous six starts combined, including losing consecutive 1-0 decisions. Associated Press NFL TORONTO — It took four plays for rookie first-round draft pick C.J. Spiller to begin delivering on his dynamic billing, as the running back sparked the Buffalo Bills in a 34-21 preseason victory over Indianapolis on Thursday. Starting in place of injured veterans Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, Spiller opened the scoring on a powerful 31-yard run 3 minutes in. Drafted ninth overall out of Clemson, Spiller finished with 10 carries on 54 yards. The Bills offense followed suit. Shaking off an inconsistent debut in last week's 42-17 loss at Washington, quarterback Trent Edwards produced two scot ASSOCIATED PRESS ing drives in five series, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Lee Evans to put Buffalo up 21-14. Furthering his bid to reclaim the starting job he lost midway through last season, Edwards went 5 for 8 for 93 yards and the Bills (1-1) never trailed. The 14 points scored by Buffalo's first-stringers more than doubled the two field goals they had managed in their previous six preseason games, dating to last year. Rian Lindell hit a 24-yard with 22 seconds left in the first half to put Buffalo ahead for good, 24-21. Gonzalez when defender Drayton Florence got his hand in, deflecting the ball directly to McGee, who ran it back untouched up the left sideline. The biggest disappointment was an announced crowd of 39,583 — well over 14,000 below capacity. That's considered the latest blow for Rogers Communication, which has been under heavy criticism in the Toronto media this week for paying the Bills $78 million two years ago for the right to host the series, which runs through 2012. Neither of the first three games or the series fully sold out the Peyton Manning and the high-powered Colts (0-2) didn't disappoint in what proved to be a wide-open and entertaining first half in the fourth installment of Buffalo's five-year, eight-game series in Toronto. TRENT EDWARDS Buffalo quarterback Spiller provided the early highlight by capping a four- "If C.J. can pound out yards, move the ball and the chains, it helps scoring touchdowns." After opening with a three-and-out, Manning engineered two scoring drives on the next four series, including a perfectly placed 21-yard touchdown pass over the middle to tight end Jacob Tamme on a third-and-9. Joseph Addal also scored on a 17-yard run. Manning went 8 for 15 for 91 yards, with an interception that was returned 78 yards for a touchdown by Terrence McGee. Manning was attempting to squeeze a pass into Anthony play drive on Buffalo's opening possession. Spiller shed defensive end Robert Mathis in the backfield and then cut left across the middle, where he broke Jacob Lacey's arm tackle. He then cut up the left sideline where a shifty move allowed him to get by Antoine Bethea and into the end zone. "I just cut back, made a guy miss," Spiller said. "It felt good to get in there." Spiller credited the offensive line, which returned three starters who missed last week's game: tackles Demetrius Bell and Cornell Green and guard Eric Wood. "It starts with our running game," Edwards said. "If C.J. can pound out yards, move the ball and the chains, it helps scoring touchdowns." Initially supposed to be eased into this preseason, Spiller will get a bulk of the action after Jackson (broken hand) and Lynch (sprained ankle) were both hurt in last week's 42-17 loss at Washington. Jackson is expected to miss at least the next three weeks, while Lynch is considered week to week. The crowd that did show proved lively, but it's unclear how many paid full price for their tickets, which ranged from $75 to $275.
