BY ETHAN PADWAY epadway@Kansan.com Senior Nate Barbee is ready to lead the Kansas men's golf team this season. Even though the team is a young group, it has confidence in its abilities. The confidence stems from Barbee, who was named to the Ping All-Region team, is a Cleveland Golf/ Srixon All-American Scholar and was named to the Big 12 All-Academic team last fall. "Everything that happens to Nate, he deserves it," coach Kit Grove said. "He is our rock to build on and his work ethic is second to none." Through his hard work he qualified individually for the NCAA Southwest regional and finished tied for 39th. Despite all his success last season, Barbee said he doesn't feel pressure. "I'm just trying to improve my scoring average and try and finish off my career on a good note," he said. "Nate is the perfect teammate, always doing the right thing on and off the course," senior Jeff Bell said. The layhawks are young, with Barbee being the only player on the team with more than one year's experience. But they have confidence because of the experience gained last year by true freshmen Alex Gutesha and Chris Gilbert. The younger team members will have excellent mentors off the course too, as Bell joined Barbee on the first Big 12 All- Academic team. "A big part of it is time manage- "A big part- ment," Barbee said. "You have four years of eligibility and so you should make the most of everything you do whether on the course or in class." The outlook on the season is positive from all sides. "We should. We should have one of our best years ever. We have a lot of new guys and the team just feels different. I think everyone's goal is to make it to regionals and from there anything can happen." Bell said. In order to achieve its goals for the year the team will be emphasizing short game play. "We just beat the short game to death," Grove said. "You can't get "Everything this happens to Nate, he deserves it. He is our rock to build on and his work ethic is second to none."
