Art faculty benefit from exchange

A unique pro bono faculty exchange between the University of Kansas and Haskell Indians Nations University has managed to bypass administrative red tape and expose art professors and students to different experiences.
The "gentleman's agreement" between KU associate professor Michael Krueger and Haskell art instructor Leslie Evans has allowed both of them different teaching perspectives.
For Krueger, he gets to work with Haskell students, whom he said tapped into their own cultures to produce their artwork. Evans was able to have contact with students at a larger institution, whom he said were much more assertive.
Here's how it works: Last semester, Krueger and Evans teamed up for a faculty-for-faculty exchange. Evans came to the University to teach Krueger's drawing class. That, in turn, freed up Krueger to set up a print-making machine at Haskell for a drawing workshop, which he helped Evans teach.
"It's more of a time exchange than a money exchange." Evans said.
There have been some unforeseen benefits from the partnership, said Evans, one of only two art instructors at Haskell.
First, Evans said he was a lot more critical of students' work, and it was helpful to have an outside perspective on the class work being done.
"It's great for the students," Evans said.
Krueger agreed.
"He's not threatened by someone else coming in and helping him out with his class," Krueger said.
with his class," Krueger said. Also, by integrating curriculum, Evans said it broke down the compartmentalized thinking students sometimes get locked into.
"You want a lot of experiences with a lot of instructors," Evans said. "Otherwise your work starts looking a lot like your instructor's style."
This semester Evans isn't teaching a class at the University, but Krueger is still able to donate his time to a print-making workshop at Haskell.
"The experience out here is enriching to me." Krueger said.
He has learned a lot about how students at both universities approach art, which he said he could use to refine his own methods.
"Most students at KU struggle knowing what they want to draw about," he said.
On the other hand. Haskell students need little prompting because they freely borrow from the imagery of their cultures.
First-year Haskell student Chris Baldwin didn't know when he enrolled in Evans' Drawing I class that he would be getting an additional instructor, but said he had enjoyed Krueger's presence.
And now Baldwin said he planned to take Krueger's Drawing II class at the University next semester for Haskell credit.
Krueger wasn't the first KU professor to begin the art faculty exchange.
Five years ago. art professor
Robert Brawley to Haskell to teach a life-drawing course, the first time that class had been offered at Haskell.
Brawley was drawn to the opportunity because his mother was a member of the Chippawa tribe in Minnesota, part of the Ojibawa Nation.
The following year he taught a painting class to a mix of 10 Haskell students and 10 KU students.
As for the current exchange, Evans and Krueger most likely will continue their partnership.
"I plan on coming out here as long as Leslie is here," Krueger said. "He's become a really good friend through this."
