Helen, Sweetheart Of The Internet Fox TV lineup revived The Associated Press NEW YORK — A sign of despair hit Fox last May when executives, on faith alone, gave a schedule slot to a series promised by *ER* creator Michael Crichton. They couldn't announce a title, a cast or a plot. There was no show, either, as it turned out. Fortunately for Fox, other prayers have been answered. Fox is enjoying a revival — the only one of the four major networks with more viewers this season than last. Even better, the young audience Fox craves is returning. "The Fox Broadcasting Company had really run into a big-time drought in terms of adding new, successful scripted entertainment programming to its schedule over a number of years," Fox boss Sandy Grushow said. Grushow was appointed in November 1999 to run the Fox A little more than a year ago, Fox was stuck with sagging ratings, a schedule of aging shows with no new hits to replace them and a bunker mentality from the public relations fiasco of Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire? Twice in the past four weeks, Fox was the top-rated network among viewers aged 18 to 49, the demographic advertisers love. It is up seven percent in that group this season, according to Nielsen Media Research. Despite a few missteps, promising shows like Malcolm in the Middle, Boston Public and Dark Angel give Fox a future it can anticipate instead of fear. A brief, uncomfortable coexistence with network entertainment chief Doug Herzog ended when Herzog left. Grushow gave that job to Gail Berman last summer. Documentary producer R.J. Cutler, whose reality series American High lasted two weeks on Fox last summer before being picked up by PBS, noticed a leadership vacuum there that Berman filled. They've helped Fox write off flops like the John Goodman comedy, Normal, Ohio, and The X-Files spinoff, Lone Gunmen. network and television studio. Some established shows revived, too. Kelley brought Ally McBeal back from a one-year slump, fortified by Robert Downey Jr. and other guest stars. The X-Files has survived the downsizing of David Duchovny's role, That '70s Show is a solid performer and The Simpsons defies all laws of television physics by going strong in its 12th season. "I would describe it as a depression," he said. "There was a little bit of a culture of, 'If it's on our air, it mustn't be any good.'" The first inkling of a turnaround came earlier in 2000 with Makcolm, the innovative, slapstick romp that gave a new twist to family comedies, and the moderately successful Titus. Then things blossomed in the fall. Producer David E. Kelley's new Boston Public was a hit on Monday night. Dark Angel made Jessica Alba a star, and the new Grounded For Life shows promise.
