Photo by Joanna Fewins/KANSAN Hawks hope to recreate shocker against Wichita Shawn Hutchinson ports@kansan.com ansan sports edito Erin Garvey remembers the last tip the Kansas softball team made to fichita State. Almost one year ago, the Jayhawks were in an offensive slump in which key had scored a measly four runs in x games while watching theircord drop to 22-23. Then came a trip to Wilkins radium in Wichita, where the hayhawks exploded with a 22-run assault during a two-game sweep of the Shockers. Kansas pounded Vichita State 9-0 in the first game and completed the sweep with a 13-5 victory in the second. So, of course, Garvey, an outfielder ho is Kansas' lone senior, rememers that trip. It will probably be on eminds of a lot of Jayhawks as they cee off against the Shockers today at p.m. in a doubleheader in Wilkins radium. "The history we've had against em is definitely a factor," said arvey, who leads the Jayhawks itth a .360 average and 40 hits."But gt now we're more focused on what we need to do as a team and not ho we're playing." What the Jayhawks would like to do is team is end a three-game losing break that has dropped them to 20-19 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12 conference. The Jayhawks lost a game at Southwest Missouri State on *fednesday before getting swept by exas Tech in two games last weekend in Lubbock, Texas. The remedy to that three-game loss streak might be the Shockers, ho are 16-18 overall and 5-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference. "We definitely need to come out and play hard in these games and get back on track," said Kansas junior outfielder Christi Musser. "We're not going to take anybody lightly." The two-game set against the Shockers comes in the middle of the Big 12 season for the Jayhawks — a season that has thus far been productive. Kansas, which won only five Big 12 games all of last season, has already won four this season, including a twogame sweep against Texas at Jayhawk Field last month. The Jayhawks are in fourth place in the Big 12 standings behind Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. With 10 Big 12 games remaining, Kansas would need to finish in the top eight in the conference standings to qualify for the Big 12 Tournament next month. That particular statistic has caught the Jayhawks' attention as they enter the stretch run of the season. "It's never too early to think about it." Garvey said. "Personally I like to take one game at a time and the rest will take care of itself." Kansas softball notes - The Jayhawks are 58-8-1 all-time against Wichita State, which includes nine-straight wins dating back to 1998. ■ Wichita State has lost six of its last eight games but defeated Evansville 3-2 on Sunday in Wichita. Today's games will mark the seventh and eighth contests for a ninegame road stretch for Kansas. The Jayhawks, who are 5-5 on the road this season, will finish their road trip with a game at Washburn on Thursday. — Edited by Melinda Weaver Do You Want to Be A Jayhawk?
