Dean Alderson, acting Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, will Dissidents supported by outsiders BY WILLIAM FRYE Gannett News Service BELGRADE, Yugoslavia—In the trial of strength between oppressive governments and people clawing at their prison bars, the advantages in the middle and long run are all with the people—especially when they shorten and encouragement from the outside. There is such a trail of strength under way in eastern Europe. Sometimes the people who challenge their government seem from the outside like Don Quixote jousting with windmills, and getting sliced to pieces in the process. But there is a raw, remarkable courage about it that commands admiration. There is a popular thesis that to support 4th of July festivities to be early Public festivities for the Fourth of July weekend will begin a day early this year. The Lawrence Jaycees-University of Massachusetts 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Stadium. The program will include a performance by the symphonic band, concert band, symphony orchestra and choir of the Midwestern Music and Art Camp at KU. Monday has been left open as a rain date. In that case, the event would still begin in Rep. Larry Winn, R-Kan., is tentatively remarks at the event, KU officials said and others. KU officials said and others. on are sale at all Lawrence supermarkets for $1.25. Cost at the gate will be $1.50. The local fireworks merchants are already preparing for the weekend by purchasing permits for opening firework stands. A spokesman for the city said yesterday that 10 permits had been issued for firewires stands. The stands will open on major highways near Lawrence. State law limits the sale of fireworks to the period of June 27 to July 5. According to the law, only common Class C fireworks through combustion can be sold in Kansas. Local statutes state that firewolfs should not be used within the vicinity of hospitals and encourage human rights activists simply spurs them to charge into the razor-sharp blades of the windmill, even worse, it blades faster than the windmill to blade the faster. This thesis is much too facile. Superficially it is true: There has been more repression in the Soviet bloc because there has been more dissidence to repress. The repression also is more visible because a larger world interest has been focused on it. But this is not to say that the human rights movement is being crushed. It is much too early to call that shot. There, along with many other examples of a vulnerable erosion of some aspects of tyranny. There is a trap here into which it is all too easy to fail. Society-bioc governments would like the western world to think they are reacting violently and irrationally by pressing pressure that is not enough to get that such pressure is counterproductive, the pressure might be eased. Too much pressure too quickly might indeed be counterproductive. There are two ways that the President Carter might overdo it. They believe that, in the specific case of Yugoslavia, they want the pressure on China's Chinese water torrent—drop by tormenting drop. The office is not unusual. It has all the normal trappings one would expect to find in an office—a desk, chairs, stacks of paper and a few pictures on the walls. The man, Donald Alderson, acting vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of men, can bring the office to life with his memories of the good and bad times and the changes that have surrounded the university of Kansas for more than 30 years. And, except for the man who occupies it, the office could be anywhere. For Alderson, these memories are vivid. He doesn't need to be reminded of the changes in KU since he first came here in 1941. "I don't have any special mementos. Just the usuals. Some photos. Some scrapbook pages." use end of this week, after spending almost a year as vice chancellor for student affairs, Alderson will return to his full-time position of dean of men, which he has held Alderson's move stirs memories David Ambler, former vice president for student affairs at Kent State University, has been appointed vice chancellor for student affairs, effective July 1. "However, I'll have equal, if not more, opportunity to meet with students in the dean of men's office than I had this last year," he said. Allerson said Tuesday that during the past year, he had spent a lot of time talking to him. Aerson said there were many ways to have a meeting with students. "You go to lunch on the hill, and you see someone who wants to talk," he said. "We talk about problems. And students share their good news, too." "I have a good circle of student friends, named one of our students just stick with me." One student leader said, "He respects students a great deal. He has an attitude that is encouraging." "He loves the University, and he shows that love." Alderson reminded about the campus. "Some things are constant about the University," he said. "I've always been attracted to the beauty of the campus." However, some things about the physical appearance of the University have changed. The campus has grown, and along with that growth the quantity and quality of the student body has grown. "In the 1940s, old Fraser Hall was the main landmark," he said. "Everything is the same on Jayhawk Boulevard except for Wescoe Hill." Alderson said new students usually had some apprehensions about the size of the room. "However, what seems like a big institution soon becomes a very comfortable one." students have been working for many of the same things over the years, he said, ranging from longer library hours to civil time. "The University is often in the vanguard," he said. Alderson said that one illustration of students expressing their opinions first was the period of campus unrest in the late 1960s. "It was a time when students were speaking directly about how they felt," he said. "It was a difficult time for them and for the University." THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Alderson said the students were angry about other things than campus problems during that time, such as the Vietnam war and rights for minority students. KU has always been a learning experience. I'm not trying to act like a college student but I do like adjusting and keeping up with the times. I enjoy the opportunity to see what college aged students are thinking about and doing each year," Alderson said.
