Sedative ban greeted with yawns

Representatives of most local pharmacies said Tuesday that a government-proposed ban on daytime sedatives would not accomplish its goal. The pharmacists said that such over-the-counter drugs actually had little sedative value, anyway.
Patrick Carpenter, pharmacist at Super X Drugs, 10 W. 23rd St., said, "I don't think they're worth anything. They don't have any tranquilizing action."
He added that the ban would do nothing to stop people from taking the sedatives,
They also said that the ban would require only a change in package labeling. The same sedatives could be sold if they were labeled as nighttime medications.
"NOTHING WILL KEEP them from taking the nighttime sedatives during the trip."
The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced last week that it would propose a ban on non-sterile condiments sedatives promoted for dautime use.
According to FDA Commissioner Donald Kennedy, the ban would be intended as a caution to those who need to maintain their vehicles or operate other machinery.
However, Jin Yowell, pharmacist at MedicalArts Pharmacy, Fourth and Maine streets, said most medications labeled as "clinical" were not used in the sedative aspect may be psychological."
Another Lawrence pharmacist, who said he preferred to remain anonymous, agreed.
IN FACT, HE SAID that, Simonex, a nighttime sedative not being banned, contained nearly twice the amount of methaprilene, the sedative ingredient, that Compoz contained. Compoz is included in the FDA ban.

Marily Spencer, pharmacist at Raney Drug Store, 921 Massachusetts St., said she didn't think people would turn to nighttime sedatives to replace the banned daytime
"I DON'T THINK they're sophisticated enough to figure out it's the same drug," she said. "They won't know they're being tricked."
The message reads, "As a daytime sedative its improved formula provides effective relief of occasional simple nervous tension. As a nighttime sleep-aid it helps you fall asleep and relieves occasional sleeeness."
Miles Nervine, one of the medications included in the FDA ban, advertises in a printed message on its package that daytime, nighttime sedatives are in服用.
However, a person has only to read the labels to discover that active ingredients listed on daytime and nighttime over-the-counter sedatives are identical.
The anonymous pharmacist agreed, though, that people would be slow to realize
the connection
'THE GENERAL PUBLIC is a little bit
stupid", he said, "But when they catch on and see that they have the same drugs, they'll start buying them for daytime use. Newton King, pharmacist at King Pharmacy, 944 Kentucky St., said he didn't stock any over-the-counter sedatives.
"Most of these medications are of little or no use as sedatives," he said. "I feel that if a person has a problem with nervous tension, it's best handled professionally." He is an alumnus, physicians.
