Wednesday, June 29, 1977 I American teenager gets upset win at Wimbledon WIMBELIDON (AP) — John McEnroe, 18, upset Phil Dent of Australia Tuesday and became the youngest men's semifinal in 100 years of Wimbledon. The fair-haired left-hander from Douglason, N.Y., who plays as an amateur among big-money professionals, won 6-4, 8-9, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He set another record at the same time. He is the first man ever to make the semifinals of the world's greatest tennis tournaments by playing through the qualifying competition. The young hero of the centennial tournament now faces No. 1 seed, Jimmy Connors, who defeated Beyron Bertram of South Africa 6-4, 3-6, 4-6. "I wasn't sure if I would get into the tournament at all." McEroe said. "and when I did get in, I didn't expect to win more than a few games in each set." The other semifinal will be between Vitas Geralalius of Howard Beach, N. W, and Jorge Cayol de Mollos of San Antonio. Gerularius alternatively Billy Martin of Palos Verdes, Calif., 6-5, 8-9, 6-2, 8-2, and Borg played some of his finest tennis to win 6-8, 8-6. In the second round, Gerularius, the man he beat in last year's final. McEnroe, an execible youngster with a white headband around his long, blond hair, had many moments of frustration before overcoming the 13th-tech Dent. He threw his raincoat down and fell on the length of the grass more than once, holding his head in his hands. But he brought his emotions under control and came from behind to win the last two sets—just when it looked as if Dent, nine years his senior, was taking control. McEronce's most prolific stroke was his backhand. He hit a magnificent backhand past the Australian to break service at 4-3 in the final set. It proved to be the shot that won the match. He kept his cool and held on to his service. MeEnroe's most despairing moment came in the second-set tie-breaker when he had set-point at 7-6 and double-faulted. He thought his second serve was on the line and argued with the linesman. The umpire pumped him to play on and there was some booing. from the dove. McEnoe then lost the tie-break 9-7 and sat on his chair with his head buried in his hands. Commission . . . From page one the sale of the second bond issue would be placed in a separate trustee account and would be used to pay off the first bond issue in 1985. Then, the lower interest rates would go towards paying off the second bond issue until the year 2000. "It's an extremely complicated method of financing, but very helpful for the city and the hospital because we can take advantage of it to attract travel," Commissioner Barkley Clark said. In separate action, the commission voted to retain two unused wings of the hospital, in hopes of finding a suitable tenant within the next few years. Barley An annexation request from the Riverview Investment Co. for a 74-86 tract on the west side of the city was referred to the Planning Commission for further study. The commission approved a motion by Clark that all annexation requests larger than 10 acres be reviewed first by the planning staff. hear other action, the commission referred a zoning ordinance amendment to the Planning Commission for reevaluation because of objections arising over allowing the establishment of private clubs in C-2 zoning districts. A C-2ining district is restricted to small outlets designed to handle everyday conditions.
