American teenager gets upset win at Wimbledon
WIMBELIDON (AP) — John McEnroe, 18, upset Phil Dent of Australia Tuesday and became the youngest men's semifinal in 100 years of Wimbledon.
The fair-haired left-hander from Douglason, N.Y., who plays as an amateur among big-money professionals, won 6-4, 8-9, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
He set another record at the same time.
He is the first man ever to make the semifinals of the world's greatest tennis tournaments by playing through the qualifying competition.
The young hero of the centennial tournament now faces No. 1 seed, Jimmy Connors, who defeated Beyron Bertram of South Africa 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
"I wasn't sure if I would get into the tournament at all." McEroe said. "and when I did get in, I didn't expect to win more than a few games in each set."
The other semifinal will be between Vitas Geralalius of Howard Beach, N. W, and Jorge Cayol de Mollos of San Antonio.

McEnroe, an execible youngster with a white headband around his long, blond hair, had many moments of frustration before overcoming the 13th-tech Dent. He threw his raincoat down and fell on the length of the grass more than once, holding his head in his hands.
But he brought his emotions under control and came from behind to win the last two sets—just when it looked as if Dent, nine years his senior, was taking control.
McEronce's most prolific stroke was his backhand. He hit a magnificent backhand past the Australian to break service at 4-3 in the final set. It proved to be the shot that won the match. He kept his cool and held on to his service.
MeEnroe's most despairing moment came in the second-set tie-breaker when he had set-point at 7-6 and double-faulted. He thought his second serve was on the line and argued with the linesman. The umpire pumped him to play on and there was some booing.

McEnoe then lost the tie-break 9-7 and sat on his chair with his head buried in his hands.
