4 Wednesday, June 29, 1977 University Daily Kansan Sports Roundup Staff Writer Royals second baseman Frank White made a back-handed stab of the line drive, twirled and flipped the ball to first baseman John Mayberry for an inning-ending double play last week. Twenty thousand fans coached with approval as White trotted off of An inning and a half later White came to bat with the potential winning run on second base. After batting the pitcher to a 3-2 count, he popped up. On this trip back to the dugout White was jeered as the crowd yelled, "We want Cookie," the veteran second baseman Cookie Rojas. White's talents were forgotten. Last year Rojas was delegated to part-time duty so the Royals could take advantage of White's superior defensive ability. But Roja's lifetime batting average is 204 and White is currently hitting .225. fans miss Cookie and his game-winning hit. The irony of White's situation is compounded because he grew up in the shadows of Kansas City's old Municipal Stadium amid its ruins. He played baseball in his home town. Frank is the only graduate of Royals owner Ewing Kauffman's school, which allows him to royally line-up start. White has considerable room for improvement at the plate, but his defensive skills are a valuable asset on the artillair turt at Royals Stadium where speed and defense are the key to consistent success. GLEANINGS FROM THE WIRE . . . FIVE TIME AMERICAN LEAGUE batting champion Rod Carew was named by the league to start his season in the Week Monday. Carew raised his league lead average to 403 after collecting 17 hits in 28 at-bats last week. He hit 65 times, out of a total of ten overweight his hitting streak to 8 games. THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS and the Kansas City Chiefs are going to have their ears tuned to the noise levels of the rock groups that play at their stadiums. A Jackson County executive has advised the two clubs that the volume of the concerts must be turned down to avoid prosecution under county public misuse "The situation has gotten out of hand when the music is so loud that it can be heard a mule away from the stadium," the official said. THE TEXAS RANGERS are operating under their fourth manager in less than a year, with four other players. Orleán third base coach, was named as the club's new pilot coach, by owner Brad Corbett. Hunter replaces intern manager Dan Stanky, and interim coach Ireland Frank Lacchusci. SPEAKING OF MANAGERS, Darrell Johnson, former Boston Red Sox manager led the Sox to the American League championship game last Thursday for a Royals-Mariners game. After the game he was in Kauffman's Stadium Club enjoying the company of former Yankee All-Star and K.C. Athletics manager Hank Bauer. Bauer now operates a liqueur店 in Prairie Village. A football history book, The Football Ball history, if the subject is brought up, THE DEFENDING WORLD CHAMPION Cincinnati Reds are blaming poor pitching for their medicine performance so far this season. The Reds have sat at the situation with a positive outlook "We just need two or three well-pitched ball games and let the bulpen rest a hit to get our ship righted and go about our play." The manager Manager Dick Wagner said Tuesday. "We've come off a rough series with Philadelphia and Los Angeles. We've made alot of pitching changes and we're trying to do everything to win our division." THE CHICAGO CUBS' fast start (46-22 for first place) is paying off for the team front office. Club Officials said Monday that the office has been inundated with requests for a fee. Their solution: Cubs' tickets can now be secured by credit card. TOM WATSON, who has won four PGA Tournaments this year, including the prestigious Masters, is not growing complacent with the tour leading $260,115 his won so far this year. Watson hopes for a Bright Open Title to add to his laurels. "I think my chances are pretty good," Watson said after his second Western Open win. **WORLD TEAM TENNIS** will begin making inroads into the European market by establishing six new $1 million franchises there, league officials said Tuesday. "This is a step in de-Americanizing tennis," team leader founder Lionel King said Tuesday. A new division headquarters will be established in Moscow, while new franchises will be located in two eastern European countries and tour in western Europe.
