Carew says he'd rather be known as fielder
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP)—Minnesota's Rod Carole has become famous for his hitting, but he claims he'd really rather talk about his fielding.
Is Carew serious?
"Sure. I think people used to downgrade my fielding, but now I can do the job with a better system."
Carew has made only four errors at first base for the Twins this season his second season at the position after being a second baseman for many years.
But that performance is less impressive when compared to his batting. He took a 403 average into last night's game against Milwaukee.
"I understand why all the questions about 400 and the hitting," Carew continued. "I tell people I really don't want to talk about it because I don't have anything to tell them."

Chris breaks Billie Jean's spell
WIMBLEDON (UPI)—Chris Evert, breaking the spell of "intimidation" cast over her by Billy Jean King, defeated the six-time Wimbledon champion in grass for 14th place by reach of the $73,440 centennial Wimbledon tennis championships.
"It was the best match I ever played on grass. I never let Billie Jean into it," Evert said. "In the past, her presence has been intimidating, but today she didn't have her usual zest. There was no fire in her eyes."
Evert, the top seed and defending champion, will meet Virginia Wade tomorrow. Wade won her quarter-final against Rosie Casals 7-5, 8-2.

LPGA bound

If Carew wins the batting championship in 1977, it would be his sixth and would put him in a position with Williams. He would then be in position to join Musial and Roger Seybynsky, each of whom wonona Single-Bye, on Horns Wagner, with eight, have won more.
"Sure, it would be nice to win another one—or three more," said Carew. "But I've won a batting championship before."
