Monday, June 27. 1977 3 11-9 1-11 The Farrah fad—it's fading By DEENAL. KERROW Staff Writer A small polyester photor of Farrah Fawcett-Majors- sporting her now-famous red mailot, flashing her fluoride smile and engulfed in a mass of toasted but balsam creme-rinsed hair- sells for $4.88, along with other bath mats. But it's not selling. In fact, according to local merchants, although Barrilr's products are flooding the market, they aren't as popular. Farrah posters, Farrah T-shirts, Farrah puzzles, Farrah dolls, Farrah tumblers, Farrah towels, Farrah books and Farrah novels. Visit www.farrahbooks.com (after any of the brands of these products). One downtown retailer, who said he preferred to remain anonymous, said his book of Farrash towels, T-shirts, rugs and pajamas is not going down at any fantastic rate." He said, despite the deluge of Farrab- fostered merchandise, "I don't think people are really going crazy over her, at least not downtown." The retailer said he had stocked two dozen of the Zodiac designs Farnara bath fabric for $249. "She's everywhere, on everything," he said, "but people aren't buying her up as if she's going out of style or was some religious idol or something." However, Sue Dalton, a department manager for Gibson Discount Center, said Gibson had had a rush on its Farrah posters and T-shirts. She said that 240 of "those posters that left nothing to the imagination" had sold in no way. "The first 60 sold within the first five days," she said, but she added that sales were up. Ed Williams, assistant store manager at K Mart, said that initially K Mart had sold 100,000 units. "But, it really softened up," he said. Williams said he had not reordered him. "We've gotten out of the line almost completely," he said. "You have to be careful because the appeal wears off, and you're stuck with the merchandise." He said that although the public had been saturated with publicity about Farrah products, he expected sales to drop drastically. "We got our share of the market, and then out," he said. Susie Frisbee, sales clerk for the Town Crier, agreed that people were not as intransient as she thought. "Personally, I think the posters are just selling as a joke," she said. "I bought one for a friend of mine, and he thought it was really funny." Frisbee said that the Town Crier hadn't had an asking for Farrah items and that Farrah's biography had sold only about three copies. University Daily Kansan Frisbie added that Farrah hadn't helped sell magazines, either—that is not until she made her debut. However, she said, the Town Crier and other stores had completely sold out of the New Times last month, "and normally we do not sell out of New Times." Farrar is currently featured on about 10 magazine covers. She regularly sends an annual amount of her work to her publisher. She attributed the sudden rash of buyers to a printed message displayed on the New Times cover: "There is absolutely nothing wrong with Hawcett-Majors in this magazine." "I think people are tired of her," Frisbee said. But, others say they're going to enjoy the Farrah phenomenon as long as it lasts—they may not spend their money buying her clothes but they have fun with her popularity. Sanders, who sells Lincoln-Mercury Cougars that Farnah has endorsed, said he holds a raffle for a life-sized cardboard toy. He shows his commercial display that cost him about $20. R. W. Sanders, Sanders Motor Co., said, "She's making a lot of money, but she'd better do it now. I'll die off. But, we had a lot of fun with her." He said the paper doll had created quite a stir, especially with high school students, and that after it had been stolen and taken he decided to hold a drawing to give it away. Sanders said that he wouldn't have been able to use the paper doll again, anyway, because Farrab's contract with the Ford Motor Co. had ended June 15. "A bunch of kids wanted it, and we couldn't pick one, so we raffled off her," he said. "And I had quite a letter of warning from Ford," he said. Sanders said that although he had had fun with his stand-up Farrah, the actual Farah was a girl. "Take her and Jimmy Carter," he said, "take away their teeth, and what have they done?" Roger Garrett, winner of Sanders' raffle and an insurance salesman with Landreth, McGrew and Johnson, said, "Well, we don't have her insured, but maybe we should. I don't know. She's liable to a pretty big price." But the way Marilyn Monroe started out," Garrett said that he didn't think Farrar Hawcett-Majors was a good actress, but added, "she doesn't have to be. She's got her own style, and she's not all that attractive, but she's a bad." He said Farrah had been a fun fad and the insurance customers had enjoyed the carriage. Garrett placed the Farrar silhouette in an associate's office and said, "Mr. Norland is the type of person who would enjoy being with people. We thought it would help his murale. "But she's just on temporary assignment to Mr. Noland. My 12-year-old son, Kirk, gets her"—he hesitated, then added—"some day." Balloon Broadcast Arts building opens in fall Construction on the new visual arts building should be completed this week, a year ahead of schedule, Peter Thompson, associate dean of the School of Fine Arts, said recently. "We will be in by the fall semester," he said. Work on the $4.1 million building began during fall 1975, and it was scheduled to be in use by the fall 1978 semester. Thompson and his team completed the work and saved the University of Kansas any money. "The walls were closed up before the cold weather began," he said, "and work could be done." The new building will have about 98,000 square feet of usable space. He attributed the early completion to excessive weather and fast work by the engineer. The visual arts department is now scattered throughout 13 buildings, Thompson said, and has never been consolidated into a single building. However, the entire city will have to move its new building this fall, he said. Classes that will eventually move to Fowler Hall, the old visual arts building, remain in their present locations until Fowler is ready. The city's art director, Fowler between Murphy and Lindley Hills near the corner of Murphy and Nalshm Drive. Amateurs test skills in radio competition The Douglas County Amateur Radio Club logged 2,075 contacts -450 more than last year-in a nationwide competition of ham radio operators last weekend. Staff Writer The two-day contest pitted more than 1,000 North American radio stations against each other to determine who could make the most contacts in a 27-hour period. The log books will be sent to the competition's sponsor, the American Radio Relay League, for verification, and final standings will be announced in a few months. Rick Link, Lawrence junior, a club member, said yesterday. Four emergency preparedness communications stations which operate independently of commercial power, were set up at two county locations—Wells' Overlook Park, south of Lawrence, and Centennial Park, near Ninth and Iowa streets. THE CLUB LOGGED 850 contacts at centennial Park and 1,225 at Wells' Rockwood. The number of contacts a station makes is a measure of how good the operators are. The numbers for each contact are Although the club made more contacts this year than last, Link said the operators were less efficient because there were four stations this year instead of two. "Conditions for radio wave propagation were not as good this year." Link said. Ham radio operators routinely communicate around the globe, but for this purpose they are more likely to use voice and Morse code signals from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Link said the Wells' Park station, which was better situated, picked up both Puerto Rico and Florida. "TO MAKE CONTACT, you tune up and down the band until you find someone broadcasting," Link said. "Then you verify that the person is sending information and enter it into the log." In last year's competition, with only two stations from Wells' Park, the Douglas County club logged 1,825 contacts to finish 17th nationally among 350 entries in its division. The club was third in the Midwest division and second in Kansas. Through the competition, the local club hopes to improve its abilities to communicate effectively in a disaster situation. Luk said. Ham operators, who must be licensed by the federal government, work closely with local civil defense and law enforcement agencies to provide communications in emergencies and natural disasters, Link said. If an emergency or natural disaster strikes the Lawrence area, ham operators would be ready to set up emergency communications. TRAINED AS SEVERE STORM spotters and tied to the Douglas County Emergency Operations Center, the local club members receive training in emergency communication networks with mobile units. When a tornado touched down in Baldwin earlier this year, the amateur radio club established the first radio communication in the area south of Lawrence.
