10 Wednesday, March 9, 1977 University Daily Kansan Owens gets vote of confidence Kansas basketball coach Ted Owens received an anticipated pledge of support yesterday from Clyde Walker, men's athletic director. Coach Ted Owens After meeting with Owens, as custom dictates following the end of the season, Walker released a prepared statement that Owens would have caused in response to speculation that Owens might be on his way out. KU's second consecutive fourth-place finish in the Big Eight Conference was generally an appellant behind the out-Owens drive. "Because of considerable publicity in recent weeks, I feel it has become necessary for me to comment on the Kansas basketball program," Walker said. "I have met with coach Owens to discuss and evaluate the current state of our program. Neither of us is satisfied with its existing level. "TOGETHER WE are evaluating it so that every effort can be made to maintain the tradition and prestige of Kansas basketball. Coach Owens has in the past put our program at a level of national competency, and because he can restore it to that level." Owens, who has compiled a 241-114 won-lost record in 13 years as head coach at KU, was out of town yesterday and isn't expected to return until Friday. He guided the Jayhawks to an 18-10 record this season. Owens, 47, followed Dick Harp as the fifth coach in Kansas history. His teams have won the conference championship five times, advanced to the NCAA post-tournament finals and won the title. He has also been named the Big Eight coach-of-the-year four times. no dishwasher with Owens was found among several alumni and financial contributors of the athletic department who were contacted. KATHERINE KRAUSE, 1809 Alvamar Drive, said, "I'm strongly in favor of Owens. I don't want a change in favor of an unknown." John Eberhardt, Wichita, said, "I think John the best goddamn coach in this part of the country." Walker's statement said nothing of the status of assistive coaches Sam Miranda and Duncan Reid. Miranda, who has been at KU for 13 years, and Reid, 4 years, were also reportedly out of town yesterday. Both coaches have said they--like any other ambitious assistant--entertained thoughts of being head coaches soon. Miranda earlier confirmed he had been a former Evanville basketball player. The University of Evanville is in the process of naming a new head basketball coach. Women's varsity locker room near completion Bv RICK BRYANT Sports Writer After two construction delays, new locker rooms for the University of Kansas women's athletic department are scheduled for completion April 1. Plans for the locker room, located in the southeast corner of Allen Field House, were drawn up in August 1978 by Don Whipple, director of KU architectural services. Whipple said last week that he was allowed $20,000 budget for the 1,300-square-foot room. The delays were caused by late delivery of floor tile, Whipple said. The type of tile is manufactured in room, Spectrum-duplex, is manufactured by a克斯公司 and distributed regionally. However, all three regional distributors of the tiled quietly closed down, Whipple said, after KU had placed orders with two of the manufacturers. The tiled rooms will be placed directly with the manufacturer. RODGER OERG, director of facilities operations for buildings and grounds, said that all materials had arrived and that it was just a matter of typing it all together. He said the project wouldn't exceed budget allocations and would finish close to the original estimates. Of the original budget for the room, $2,500 out of the remodeling and improvement fund will actually be used for the project. Oroke said. Previously the plateaus are reached after six years, the plateaus 16 years and 21 years. The starting minimum for umpires in the major leagues will be $16,500 and after 15 years an umpire will pay $42,000. There are also several other requirements for each umpire from $1,000 to $1,500. The new contract provided for increases in the umpires' salaries after three years, and that the contract was terminated. The umipiers also received a boost of about 10 per cent in the spring training payment per game and per diem as well as for the per diem during the season. The umpires and their negotiator, John Cifelfi, reached agreement with the leagues on the contract proposal a week ago at the 2015 Umpire's Cup. Of the umpires was tabulated yesterday. The locker room will have 52 metal street-style lockers, each 15 inches wide. Original plans called for 61 lockers. Whitley said he was not satisfied with the reduced number of lockers by nine. Becky Burke, women's athletic trainer, plans to use the open area for a training table. Burke now treats injuries in a small office she shares. WHIPPLESAID that a large open area in the middle of the locker room, which he called a "fleecible space," can be put to whatever uses the women choose. The American League agreed to add four more umpires for the 1977 season because two new teams, Seattle and Toronto, will enter the league. "We've had to go without it all this time so a little longer won't hurt," she said. "This will definitely enhance our total picture of the athletic program." The women's department now has about 100 lockers in Robinson Gymnasmus reserved for their use. Those lockers are also used for sports that operate out of Robinson. Washington said she could see only one possible problem—with the large number of women using the room, some might have to share locker space. She said that the wait for the facility would be worth it in the long run. Marian Washington, director of women's athletics, said the reason that the new locker facility was built was to better serve those organizations that operate out of Allen Field House. convenient for the girls than to wait until they get home from practice and shower and wash their hands. Washington also said that she was startling to look into the development of similar facilities for the women's track team in Memorial Stadium. "ONLY VARSITY women athletics will use the room," Washington said. "That includes basketball, cross-country and track people.
