Porno, get-rich gimmicks some mailbox junk
The mail arrives. Along with Playboy magazine and a letter from grandma come several pieces of unwanted or junk mail—letters of news, fundraising appeals and free samples.
"We don't consider it junk mail, because some people like to receive it," he said. "We're not going to send some students and shut down are happy to receive any kind of mail they can get."
HARRIS SAID THAT junk mail is always sent third class, as is mail from civic clubs, churches, other organizations and mail-order companies.
For that reason, he said, it's difficult to say what is good mail and is junk mail. One man's throw-aways might be another's get-rich sweepstakes.
Harris said many businesses depended on third class mail, and would hardly
"You have to remember that all the large businesses like Searcs, Wards and Spiegle's built their success on third class mail. Harris said. "They wouldn't send mail if
BUT, THERE ARE ways to stop junk mail.
people didn't read it and it wasn't profitable."
The most effective way, Harris said, was to write directly to the companies who send unwanted mail and ask that the person's name be removed from the mailing lists.
Another way, he said, is to write to the Direct Mail Marketing Association, Inc., 6 E.43rd St, New York, N.Y., 10017, and ask for a Mail Preference Service Form. That form assures removal of a person's name from mailing lists used by 400 cooperating mailers who supply 70 per cent of the junk mail.
HOWEVER, IF THE TREW unwanted mail is more serious than junk mail, like pornographic literature or fraudulent advertising, legal action can be taken.
But, Harris said, the form is only partially effective because not all mailing lists can be located. States, companies, churches and other organizations have some kind of mailing list, he said.
"If they object to the mail on moral grounds or if they think it might be false advertising, we'll have it looked into," Harris said.
He said to stop pornographic mall, people could fill up form 2201 at the post office. But literature keeps coming after 30 years, critical can be brought against the maller.
To stop fraud, he said, people should read their maid carefully. If they buy a falsely advertised dress, they should report the name of the company involved to the post.
