Friday, November 19, 1976 University Daily Kansan ? meets nawks State wa at Women cagers face alums tonight By DOUG BURSON Sports Writer The KU women's basketball team will rely on quickness and the fast break when the season opens tonight against the Javawks' alumni. The game, which begins at 7:30 in Allen Field House, will give the Jawahars an opportunity to compete with their regular team. The players of Grandview College of Des Moines, Iowa Grandview, rated as one of the nation's top teams last year, should be respectable, according to KU coach Marian Washington, despite a new head coach this season. Washington, returning for her fourth year at KU, said her team could make up for its lack of height with experience. The Jayhawks will be returning eight lettermen, including sophomores Adrian Mitchell and Kelley Phipps. "My players must be able to work well under the basket because of the kind of offense we hope to play," she said. "We need them to perform well, to play badly toy and plays as well as any six-footer in the Big Eight. She has really smoothed out her play in recent weeks." Mitchell, Phipps and freshman Cheryl Burrell will turn for the Jayhawks tonight. KU will run a man-to-man defense, Washington in aid, in an attempt to capitalize on the weakness of his team. Freshmen play on this year's team are Susan Berens, Margaret Douglas, June Koleber, Jill Larson, Donna Moer, Rose McDonald, Michael Meyer, Anne House, Dawn Eikler, Kearen Jamison, Jennifer Lutz and Marcie Penner are returning from last year.
