6 Friday, November 19, 1976 University Dally Kansan KU stands in Tigers' bowl path Assistant Sports Editor By GARY VICE A week ago, the Missouri Tigers were thinking Orange Bowl. But after losing to Alabama 27-20 last Saturday, they'll be in the more much less succulent fruit — the tangerine. Representatives of the Tangerine Bowl will be on hand to watch the Tigers host the Kobe Bryant Challenge Tournament Don Faurio Field in Columbia. The 83rd version of the MU-KU clash pits the conference's sixth and seventh place teams in a game of final game of the regular season for both. The way the two teams have played this season, it's difficult to predict a victory for either one. Kansas, 5-5, has long since lost its early season winning touch, and Missouri, 6-4, has been perhaps the most inconsistent team in the nation this year. Steve Pisarkiewicz THE TIGERS have become reknown as giant killers. Missouri has slain powerhouses Southern Cal, Ohio State and Nebraska this season, but fell to Illinois. The KU-MU rivalry, forever called the oldest football matchup west of the Mississippi, has been dominated in recent years by the Jayhawks. The 'Hawks have won four of the last five games, and another team will go on to win the winning season for Kansas. It might mark the exit of Missouri coach Al Onofrio, who is concluding his sixth season. MISSOURI, WHICH has the luxury of choosing between two experienced quarterbacks, is expected to start Steve Pisarkiewicz over Peter Woods. Pisarkiewicz, who is the superior passer of the two, is expected to get the nod because he is a senior. Woods, however, probably will see plenty of action. One of their favorite targets, speedster Leo Leus, broke his leg last week, but Joe Stewart, Pete Woods who leads the conference with 38 receptions, remains. MU's rushing attack, which is most effective with Woods at the helm, is powered by tailback Curtis Brown and backfull Robbie Porter. Both averaged 5.8 yards and sophomore, averages 5.8 yards a carry. AIMING TO stop Missouri's offense no matter who is quarterback is senior linebacker Terry Beeson. Beeson, who is fifth on KU's all-time tackle chart with 281, may move ahead of former linebacker Steve Towle in third place with 14 tackles. Emery Hicks is fourth with 287 tackles. Playing alongside Beeson at linebacker until last week was Tom Dinkel. Dinkel, who against Colorado returned to the end position he played last year, is expected to return it tomorrow. Sophomore Tom Andalkwilz backs up Dinkel at linebacker. THE GAME also will conclude the collegiate career of senior running back Laverne Smith, who is fifth on the Big Eight's all-time rush line. Smith, who has 165 kick returns and yards to pass Oklahoma's Greg Prutt and 131 yards to pass Colorado's Charlie Davis. Last year against Missouri, Smith recorded the biggest day of his career, gaining 238 yards on only 15 carries. In fact, KU's entire running attack went vertically unchecked for 628 yards in recording a 42-24 victory and a birth to the Sun Ball. In that game, KU fullbacks Norris Banks and Dennis Wright combined for 233 yards. Banks had 129 and Wright had 113. Banks, a player with 46 rushing stats, rushed list from his 18th position to 14th with a 400-yard performance against the Tigers. He now has 1,230 yards rushing.
