12 Thursday, November 18, 1976 University Dally Kansan Extra students cause KU's fee surpluses Because 815 more students than expected enrolled at the University of Kansas this semester, KU has collected more than $1 million in additional student fees. But approval must come from the Kansas Legislature before the $1,103,408 can be spent. At today's budget hearings in the House, lawmakers have their case for spending the additional fees. At the beginning of each year, University officials decide on budget requests for the summer school. The amount is based on the expected number of students that will enroll during that year. This fall's enrollment was 24,372. The amount of $1,103,408 consists of additional fees collected from the past spring and summer semesters, and from this fall, as well. The company is business and fiscal affairs, said yesterday. About $11,000 of that amount is interest on the student fee money, Nitcher said. Jeannette Johnson, assistant to Dei Shankel, executive vice chancellor, said that the University was underbudgeted for the additional 815 students. The departments and schools have overextended themselves to provide more services. For each additional 15 full-time students enrolled this year, KU can request $15,000 in tuition. The uses of the money probably will include paying for additional staff and library The legislature appointed spending of the tees, Dykes and his staff will decide exactly what to spend. If approval comes, it will be in the spring when the legislature makes its final decision on KU's budget. In the past, the legislature hasn't turned down any requests from KU to collect additional enrollment fees. Varied grounds equipment helps keep campus neat By NANCY TEETER Staff Writer Although the building looks as if it's one of the oldest on campus, inside "the barn" are some of the newest things in grounds and parking. Most of them as a chip stumper and a leaf sucker. The barn is an old stone building located behind the university's central power plant. The equipment is part of the assorted group of machinery used by buildings and grounds to keep the University of Kansas campus in tip top shape year- The grounds crew gardens more than 600 acres of the 1,000-acre campus, Tom Lee, landscape foreman for buildings and grounds, said yesterday. "We could't keep the campus the way we do if we didn't have this equipment," he said. "The campus has grown faster than the grounds crew has." LEE SAID the barn used to shelter that pulled the old mowing machines 30 years. But now an odd assortment of machinery is stored inside. The chip stumper removes tree stumps and a brush chipper chops branches, and the plasters for use as mulch around small trees. The leaf sucker, also called the "giant vac," does just that—it tucks up leaves. Lee said it brought in eight to 10 loads of leaves each month by matching the two months it was in each year. Another machine, a leaf sweeper, picks up leaves and dumps them in the gutters for recycling. The barn also stores a roller, a compressor on a trailer, a high loading tractor and a trencher for digging underground cable trenches. THE HIGH ranger, which looks like a telephone company truck, is used for painting and very high loading. Lee said. The six-month-old truck is used every Friday when the crew checks the University street lights. Most of the 30 trucks and five small trailers used by buildings and grounds for utility vehicles. The maintainer, a type of road grader, is kept outside, as aid to the caterpillar tractor THE WINTEN equipment consists of four tools, a bucket and a maintainer, a sand truck and shovels, beavers or trees. Lee pointed to a trailer loaded with sprinkling pipes and said that he wished the team had more experience. "When you've got to use all that water, you know something's wrong, like the drought we've had the past three years," he said. Contrary to popular belief, Lee said, the ground crew didn't purposefully turn the gas tank on. "We always left at least one opening to each building," he said. "We have to water the thousands of trees and shrubs we've planted and it's too dark to water at night." MINOR REPAIRS on the machinery are done in a small shop at one end of the barn, which during the summer also serves as storage space for 24 lawn mowers. Major repairs are handled by the buildings and grounds garage. RED DOT SHOE SALE! SAVE $5 ON SELECTED FOOTWEAR It's what's on the toe that counts!
