Freon's ozone harm called fact
University of Kansas chemistry professors said last week that the theory of atmospheric contamination by aerosol sprays had recently been supported by fact.
Freen, the Du Pont brand name for one of a class of chemical substances called fluorocarbons, has been the target recently of considerable criticism because of the effect it might have on the upper atmosphere.
This normally inert gas can break down the layer of zone in the stratosphere, which protects us from dangerous ultraviolet radiation.
An increase in ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth would cause an increase of skin cancer. One often fatal type of skin cancer is melanoma, a skin tumor people a year, killing 2,700 of them. Sherwood Rowland of the University of California at Irvine, formerly a KU chemistry professor, has tried to make this point known to the public since 1971.
PETER HIERl, associate professor of chemistry, said that based on findings published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the conclusion of fluoroverbs in the oceaphere were chose to Kowalw's predictions.
"But it's difficult to detect and trap because of its low concentration and high solubility."
Rowland has called for a nationwide ban on the use of fluorocarbons as propellants in aerosol spray products. With a natural lifetime of 20 to 100 years, fluorocarbons, released in 1974, he said, will have their full effect in the 1980s. Rowland estimated that
a five per cent decrease in the upper atmosphere ozone will lead to a 10 per cent increase in ultraviolet radiation and a 10 per cent increase in cases of skin cancer.
THE INERT property of fluorocarbons, Hierl said, makes the chemical ideal for aerosol propellants and refrigerator coolants. He added that because of the time it takes for the chemical to reach the upper atmosphere, use of fluorocarbons might not be taken for a year or so in order for the ozone situation to be studied fully.
Iranian students protest U.S. and French arrests

Masked students representing the Iranian Student Association (ISA) yesterday protested the U.S. and French governments' treatment of Iranian students by distributing leaflets in front of Strong, Wescow and Green halls and the Kansas
A spokesman for the students said that the masks were worn because students feared they would be photographed by SAVAK, the Iranian secret police.
According to the ISA spokesman, Jack Anderson, Washington columnist, had recently reported that a SAVAK document written by him was about the SAVAK should send information regarding demonstrations of dissident Iranians, strikes, suspicious traffic, students' calls to the imperial embassies and the publishing of publications, conventions and seminars".

The KU ISA members said they were protesting the arrest of 92 Iranian students in Houston Nov. 9. The Associated Press reported the students in Houston were charged with disorderly conduct following a clash between students and police during the demonstration outside the French consulate.
Houston ISA members arrested in the demonstration were protecting the Nov. 2 arrest of six Iranian students following the shootings in Paris of an Iranian diplomat.

Ozone is oxygen that contains three atoms instead of the usual two. Forming a shell around the earth, the ozone screens the radiation produced by the sun. Fluorocarbons, because they are inert gases, eventually drift to the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Oxygen and ozone radiation causes one of its elements, chlorine, to separate from the molecule.

French people supported the ISA, despite what the term government was describing of the on-ground
THE KU USA is collecting signatures on a petition to be sent to French president Valery Giscard d'Estainton condemning the killing of four Russian deportation of four others. The petition calls for the government to release and drop all charges against the two students, stop deportation orders against the four other students and reassure of Iranian students in France.
ACCORDING TO Rowland, this chlorine atom causes the extra oxygen atom to separate from an ozone molecule. One chlorine atom can work on hundreds of ozone molecules. When the ozone breaks there are ultraviolet radiation reaches the earth.
ISA members said most KU students accepted the literature they handed out.
Leaflets distributed by the ISA charged that recent U.S. and French multibillion dollar contracts to provide arms and nuclear power plants to the Iranian government had affected U.S. and French government policy and treatment of Iranian students.
In the meantime, alternative substances are being studied. These include other types of Freon, which are just as inert, but don't have the same effect on the upper atmosphere because they don't contain chlorine. But John Landgrebe, professor of chemistry, said industry wasn't prepared to produce them in large quantities.
In September, the National Research Council (NRC) announced its agreement with Rowland's hypothesis that human immune system layers and recommended that at least some, and perhaps all use of Frona as a propellant be eventually stopped. Instead of an immediate ban, NRC recommended a two-way approach to provide for additional research.
In addition to the danger to human life, Rowland suggests that increased radiation might have an effect on plant life and weather.
