By Eric Nelson They are receiving an education from lecturers and faculty members who, despite having doctorates, are paid as part-time faculty and are denied tenure-track positions and wages. Kansan staff writer Steve Goldman, director of freshman-sophomore English, said the situation was based merely on economics. "Tenure-track positions cost a lot of money." he said. "We depend on them to a very significant extent," he said. Hiring part-time faculty is cheaper and more practical, Goldman said. He said part-time faculty members were used for freshman and sophomore-level classes and occasionally at the junior and senior levels. Dave Shulenburger, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, the use of part-time faculty depended on each department's needs. Candidates for tenure-track positions must have their primary degree, usually a doctorate. Tenure-track positions posed a greater financial burden because of financing of research, he said. Tenure-track members are paid only for teaching. Shelenburger said that in Fall 1988, there were 851 full-time tenure-trained employees, 477 GTAs and 178 non-ranked faculty members who taught full-time, not part-time. The faculty who were teaching part-time. Salary also depends on the situation and qualifications of the employee. Some lecturers are paid less than those of their assistant, while some are paid less. Goldman said part of the problem centered on the large number of doctorate degrees in the country Shulenburger said one of the larger users of part-time faculty was the English department. Mary Davidson, lecturer in English, earned her doctorate at KU and has been teaching as a part-time employee since 1981. She said that, according to the Modern Language Association, 50 percent of the people with doctorsates in the nation got on the tenure track. She said the number was much lower at KU. "To get the classes covered, they hire most people at the lower rate. she said, "The way we deal with people, but I feel people are getting ripped off." fession should limit the number of graduate students and doctorate candidates to allow only the best She said if only half of all medical students were receiving jobs, something would be done to cut down the number of them. Unfortunately, the English profession and University administration enjoy a high rate of cheap labor such as GTAs and part-time faculty, she said. Davidson said the English pro- She said she had not applied for any positions in the past couple of years. She had been in the top 10 of her profession, but never but pterygium, she said, but pterygium, the one bred, she said. Goldman said the prospects for hiring at KU this year would not be great. "If we are very, very lucky,we will get to hire one person," he said. Steve Farmer, lecturer in English, earned his doctorate at KU two years ago. He has taught full and parttime at KU and also had taught at the Kansas City Art Institute to make ends meet. In the rejection letters he has received weekly, he is informed that he is only one of hundreds or thousands of applicants, he said. "The standard line is that things will look up in a couple years," he said. Summer program offers students reduced price Kansan staff writer The KU study abroad program involving Lawrence's Japanese sister city, Hirasuka, has been revised to benefit students. She said that by reducing the price, this program was now similar to all other study abroad programs that the University of Kansas offered. The five-week summer program will cost students $550 less. It originally was priced at $3,200 and reduced to $2,650 to fit into student's budgets better, said Nancy Mitchell, coordinator for Asian programs. The other revisions in the program involve giving six credit hours to KU students instead of five, and offering advanced Japanese language course. Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Japanese will be offered along with a course in Japanese society and business. Business students can fulfill their area studies requirement with the business course, and students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences can receive credit to fulfill their non-Western culture requirement. The program will remain the same except for these changes, Mitchell said. "I think its going to be a terrific program," she said. "There's such potential for KU and the city of Lawrence." The program is open to any student; language experience is not necessary. Big 8 Tournament Rib Sale 1. Whole Slab $10.99 (includes 2 side orders) 2. Short End $6.99 (includes 1 side dish) 2.
