Allen Kansan staff writer In an attempt to attract women into the School of Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers is sponsoring its fifth annual outreach program for about 200 high school women and their teachers. Mary Plumb, director of women's engineering programs, said the school and profession tradition had been dominated by white men. the public about the role of engineers in society. "We want to be sure they — high school women — don't overlook this as a major," he said. "We don't want it to think it's just something boys do." Locke said the percentages of "Some girls don't really consider it an option." she said. "Why? I don't know Maybe they've never been here who was an engineer." Plumb said General Student Population % School of Engineering Women 49.4 14.3 African-American 2.4 2.9 Hispanic-American 1.6 1.3 American Indian .6 .7 Asian-American 2.0 4.4 Foreign 7.3 14.4 Unreported 4.9 1.2 Melissa Unterberg/KANSAN there was a general perception in the profession that there would be a significant shortage of engineers in the next two decades and that it was important to recruit women to make up for the shortage. The engineering school presently has an enrollment of 14.3 percent women, while the total undergraduate enrollment is 25.6 percent of Kansas is 49.4 percent women. Carl Locke, dean of engineering, said the outreach program was an important part of Engineering Week, a series of events designed to educate She said the percentage of women in the engineering school was higher than in the previous two years and that about 60% of women working in the profession. women and minorities enrolled in the School of Engineering were close to the national averages. Plumb said the outreach program was designed so high school women would consider engineering as a career. The program includes insight into job possibilities and what engineers actually do. Each discipline within the school will make a presentation so prospective students understand each engineering field. Tours of Learned Hall will be conducted for the high school women and their teachers who are attending the outreach program. The students come from more than 20 schools in Missouri and Kansas. The Associated Press Mandatory AIDS testing for health workers controversial ATLANTA — Groups ranging from the American Medical Association to the American Civil Liberties Union told federal officials yesterday that AIDS from a doctor did not warrant mandatory testing of health workers. The first of two days of hearings on the issue by the national Centers for Disease Control brought out dozens of doctors, medical groups and political coalitions with opinions about what, if anything, should be done in the wake of the discovery that three children could not get the AIDS virus from their dentists. Several groups also took the occasion to blast a CDC draft report The AMA and the American Dental Association have recommended that AIDS-infected practitioners either their patients or give up surgery. containing an estimate of the risk to patients of infected physicians. One called the estimate a very large instance of mush. "A physician who has a transmissible and fatal disease should not place his or her patients at risk," said Nancy Dickey, an AMA trustee. But mandatory testing would be overreacting to a very slight risk, she said. "We should not lose sight of the fact that physicians also have rights." We Make Student Loans!
