Program aims to lure women to engineering

In an attempt to attract women into the School of Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers is sponsoring its fifth annual outreach program for about 200 high school women and their teachers.
Mary Plumb, director of women's engineering programs, said the school and profession tradition had been dominated by white men.

there was a general perception in the profession that there would be a significant shortage of engineers in the next two decades and that it was important to recruit women to make up for the shortage.
The engineering school presently has an enrollment of 14.3 percent women, while the total undergraduate enrollment is 25.6 percent of Kansas is 49.4 percent women.

The students come from more than 20 schools in Missouri and Kansas.

Mandatory AIDS testing for health workers controversial
ATLANTA — Groups ranging from the American Medical Association to the American Civil Liberties Union told federal officials yesterday that AIDS from a doctor did not warrant mandatory testing of health workers.
The first of two days of hearings on the issue by the national Centers for Disease Control brought out dozens of doctors, medical groups and political coalitions with opinions about what, if anything, should be done in the wake of the discovery that three children could not get the AIDS virus from their dentists.

The AMA and the American Dental Association have recommended that AIDS-infected practitioners either their patients or give up surgery.
