"If we would have had this kind of fund five years ago when Mary Elkin was getting ready to sell, we could have jumped in and secured it," said Kelly Kindscher, Lawrence graduate student.
Chris Laver, a scientist with the Kansas Biological Survey, presented an inventory report of natural areas to the county commissioners.
"There are a total of 129 natural areas totaling over 2,800 acres in Douglas County that have natural ecological systems," he said. "Among them, we found five wetlands that are important habitats." We feel we have identified over 90 percent of the remaining natural areas."
County administrator Chris McKenzie said after the meeting that if the proposal were approved by the commissioners Dec. 17, the county would create a special tax to acquire the $40,000.
He said the tax would be voted on by residents in either a special election or the April election.
