Andrew Cuomo and members of Regents, officials said yesterday. Robert Creighton, chairperson of the Regents, said he was encouraged about the future of the Regents institutions after meeting with Finney during state budget appeals Tuesday. Regents officials and the presidents of the seven Regents institutions attended the meeting to appeal for support for higher education, Creighton said. The tentative budget allocated to Regents schools was $23 million less than the schools received last year, he said. Regents officials requested restoration of the $23 million and an additional $7 million. Money for the Margin of Excellence is about $16 million of the additional money requested. The Margin of Excellence was the Board of Regents three-year plan to bring the total financing of its seven institutions to 95 percent of that of their peers and faculty salaries to 100 percent of that of their peers. The Legislature financed the first two years but not the third. Stanley Kopik, executive director of the Regents, said he also was encouraged about the Margin's future after talking with Finney. Kopik said that although she offered no possible methods for financing the plan, Finney seemed very supportive of the Margin. "I think it went extremely well." Koplik said. "She asked very good questions and I am convinced that we will have a very strong and positive relationship with the governor-or-elect." Kopikl said other people he had spoken with seemed supportive of the Margin. "At least so far, I am encouraged by the discussions we've had," he said. "I haven't heard anyone say no. So I think there is hope." Like Kopik, Chancellor Gene A Budig said in a statement after the meeting that Finney asked good questions and that she respected the job she did. She said she wanted a strong partnership of higher education in Kansas. Finney is not restricted to planning for higher education, though. Budig's statement said that she would like to help educators who are taking post-secondary education programs. Finney indicated that she was pleased with the progress of the University of Kansas, Wichita State University and the University fund drives, Budd said.
