This story was inspired by a dear friend of mine, an attractive man whose rock-solid confidence has one tiny, hidden fissure that, if tampered with, could bring the foundation of his self-esteem crashing to the ground. This story is a tribute to the women who know and love men like my friend.
This story is also a tribute to the men who, like my friend, live in fear that some insensitive soul, God forbid a woman, will tickle that one tiny crack in their self-esteem.
s talking about this taboo subject will help men and women get over their trepidation. So I'm going to come right out and say it:
Some college-aged men are beginning to lose their hair.
There. It's out. It wasn't that painful, was it?
Now that we've taken the first step, why do some men experience the phenomenon of hair-loss?
Old wives tales abound about hats and stress causing hair-loss, but the simple fact is male pattern baldness is genetic. Charles Yockey, chief of staff at Watkins Memorial Health Center, said that men who want to know what they will eventually look like should get a photo of their father or grandfather.
Yockey explained that men lose their hair depending on how sensitive they are to testosterone, the same hormone that, ironically, causes hair to grow on the face. Testosterone kills the hair follicles in some men, and there's nothing men can do to stop it.
But there are ways to cover it, as a slew of late-night infomercials attest. Perhaps this is why men are so sensitive about their hair — they're terrified of being associated with the Hair Club for Men or instant hair in a spray-paint can. And who can blame them?
Some men even cringe at the mention of Rhogaine with Minoxidil. But, unlike hairpieces or quick-dry steel wool, Minoxidil is the only product that works. Yockey said the topical drug is expensive at $45 a month and requires a lifetime commitment, but Minoxidil is a popular option for many men because it actually does grow hair.
Medical facts and cheesy advertising gimmicks aside, why are men so sensitive about their hair, or lack of it?
Yockey said one reason is that men with less hair tend to look older.
"Our society is consumed with youthfulness," he said. "We attribute loss of hair to aging. The biggest fear of young men is that they will look older than they are and won't be able to get dates."
Phil Leffingwell, Kansas City, Kan. sophomore, thinks some men may associate their hair with their manhood.
"Hair could be a sign of virility," he said.
That could be a sign of virility. He said Dawn Bennett, San Antonio, Texas, freshman, said vanity could also be a reason for hair-loss sensitivity.
"Maybe its the same reason we're concerned with having zits," she said.
"That's like asking why girls are so sensitive about having big butts," he said.
Comments such as those may not stop men from worrying about losing their hair. Vanity and fear of aging are tough topics to tackle. But talking about hair-loss may help mend that crack in men's self-esteem.
"Thad a teacher in high school who was going bald," she said. "We pretty much all thought he was good looking."

In today's society women can sympathize with fears of aging and the desire to be attractive to the opposite sex. But many intelligent and sensitive women agree hair really doesn't matter that much.
"I'm going out with a guy who has a receding hairline and that didn't stop me from going out with him," said Nicole Mercer, Wichita sophomore. "In fact, I didn't notice until he made comments."
"You can't do anything about it," he said.
Shannon Peterson, Atwood sophomore, said that some women even find men with thinning hair sexy.

The Environmental Assessment Center in Okayama, Japan, announced in October that it had manufactured an experimental sausage out of recycled Tokyo sewage by adding soybean protein and steak flavoring to "sewage solids." A company spokesman said, "[S]ewage isn't really such a dangerous and dirty thing."

However, he did not foresee commercially marketing the sausage.
"Sewage does have a slight image problem. I don't think people will be content eating something they know has been excreted by humans."
In October, Mohammad Jafari was shot pointblank between the eye with a 2.2-caliber pistol during a convenience store holdup in Memphis, Tenn., but the bullet failed to penetrate his skull. Jafari was back at work the next day with only a nine-stitch wound.
"I have a hard head," Jafari said.
Animals need shrinks too
The Washington Post reported in August that there are 3,000 pet therapists in the United States, including 50 fully certified as animal behaviorists, and that they charge fees ranging from $150 to $400 for three-hour sessions.
"There's a reason for everything [animals] do," one pet therapist said.
Said a skeptical veterinarian, "The pets aren't crazy. The humans are crazy."

After he crashed his stolen car in September, Mark David Warner, 29, hopped on a 13-ton front loader at a construction site and led eight police cars on a 40-minute. 15 mph "chase" down a highway near Orlando (Fla.) International Airport. Warner, just five days out of prison at the time, was charged with attempted murder for ramming an occupied police car.
Said a security guard on the scene, "No one in his right mind would do those kinds of things."
Holy hats
In August, delegates to the national convention of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith in Charleston, W. Va., celebrated by wearing stylish hats, as socialites do at events such as the Kentucky Derby. Said one delegate, "We glorify God when we wear hats."
Many delegates brought hat wardrobes with them, and 14 hat vendors set up booths at the convention.
Closed Sundays
Although no law forces them to open on Sundays, the 285 members of the Arkansas Automobile Dealers Association voted unanimously in March to recommend that the Legislature require them to be closed on Sundays.
Oops. Shalala!
In March, the Department of Health and Human Services announced a crackdown on universities that had billed the department in the past for expenses that were not related to any research grants they had received from an agency. The department revealed that the biggest offender was the University of Wisconsin at Madison, whose chief executive officer for the previous several years was Donna Shalala, now secretary of Health and Human Services.
