16 BIG 12 BAYLOR BEARS Dunn, Udoh lead Bears past Cyclones ASSOCIATED PRESS Baylor's Laceduari Dunn tries to make a shot around Iowa State defender Marquis Gilstrap in the second half of their game last Wednesday in Waco, Texas. Dunn scored 21 points in the Bears' 84-63 victory. By Stephen Hawkins Associated Press — Wednesday, Feb. 3 WACO, Texas — LaceDarius Dunn scored 21 points, including four three-pointers, Ekpe Udoh had his 11th double-double of the season and No. 20 Baylor backed up its big win on the road with an 84-63 victory against Iowa State on Wednesday night. Udoh had 19 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots while Tweety Carter scored 14 points for the Bears, who were coming off an overtime victory Saturday at then-No. 6 Texas. They had lost to Kansas State before that in their last home game to end a school-record 11-game winning streak at the Ferrell Center. Anthony Jones hit a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run for Baylor and stretch its lead to 10 after Iowa State got a free throw in the opening seconds after halftime. There had been six ties and six lead changes in the first half, but none after that. Dunn made a three-pointer on the first shot of the game, and his last came with 6:15 remaining with an extremely frustrated Iowa State coach Greg McDermott fuming on the sideline. Things really turned to fun for Baylor after that, with slam dunks from three different players on consecutive possessions. Dunn had the first slam on an ally-oop pass from Udoh, who got the next slam before Quincy Ack, who finished with 10 points, threw one down. Walton was open at the basket the next time down, but settled for a layup instead. The final margin was the largest of the game and Baylor had only eight turnovers. Udoh should have had another assist, but instead was given a missed shot when his pass rolled off the rim — and was grabbed by Acy for a slam. That ended a wild sequence when Carter missed a three-pointer and the ball bounced to the other end of the court. Dunn outran several Cyclones and saved it from going out of bounds to Walton. It is only the fourth time in school history the Bears have won at least 17 games in their first 21. The others were all NCAA tournament teams — 1946, 1948 and 2008. OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS Cowboys lose to Texas after a slow second half By Jeff Latzke Associated Press — Monday, Feb. 1 STILLWATER, Okla. — Freshman swinger Jordan Hamilton scored a career-high 27 points and No. 9 Texas finally slowed down James Anderson in the second half to beat Oklahoma State 72-60 on Monday night. The Longhorns had lost three of their previous four games after reaching No.1 in the nation for the first time in school history. But they got back on track Monday, winning in a building that's been a house of horrors for Texas teams with top-10 rankings. Texas had lost the last three times it brought a top-10 ranking into GallagherIba Arena. This time, the Longhorns fell behind by 11 in the first half before Hamilton got going. He scored all but two of his points in the final 22 minutes and put the game away with a three-pointer from the right wing with 2:19 remaining that gave Texas a 13-point lead. Anderson had 28 points to lead Oklahoma State, but only four in the second half. Obi Muonelo added 12 points and Matt Pilgrim had 11 points and 10 rebounds in his first start since the second game of the season. The Cowboys played without starting point guard Ray Penn for the fourth straight game due to a knee injury and cleaned up their game after averaging 19.7 turnovers without him. OSU gave it away only 11 times, but Texas was even better with a season-low five turnovers while shooting 59 percent in the second half (16 for 27). Oklahoma State had a 16-game home winning streak snapped. COLORADO BUFFALOES Defensive effort keeps Tigers ahead of Buffaloes Associated Press Saturday, Feb. 6 BOULDER, Colo. — Missouri made sure it didn't have another second-half meltdown. Instead, the Tigers buried Colorado with a second-half surge. Marcus Denmon scored a career-high 22 points, Kim English had 21 points and Missouri routed the Buffaloes 84-66 on Saturday. The Tigers had their 32-game home win streak snapped Wednesday when they blew an 11-point lead in a 77-74 loss to Texas A&M. Thanks to a strong defense and solid outside shooting Saturday, there was no such collapse against the Buffaloes. "We always try to be a defensive-minded team first," Denmons said. "When you've got the defensive rhythm going, it allows your offense to be that much better." The Tigers' defense held Colorado to seven field goals and forced nine turnovers in the first half as they took a 42-39 lead into the break. Against the Aggies, they faltered after halftime, but they only got better against Colorado. Ahead 43-33, they went on a 14-4 run aided by consecutive three-pointers from Denmon and English that pushed the lead to 57-37 with 14:40 to go. "I thought it was one of our more complete games," Missouri coach Mike Anderson said. "I thought we were blue-collar. We looked like the team of last year. We established our identity on defense. I thought we took the fight to Colorado." Missouri led by 23 before Colorado, coming off a 72-66 overtime loss to No.1 Kansas on Wednesday, cut it to 66-53 with 6:18 left, but the lead quickly swelled to 20. "Teams are going to go on runs," English said. "We just had to stop the bleeding." THE WAVE FEBRUARY 10,2010 1 THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN
