City may limit number of downtown-area bars Last night, the City Commission agreed to establish a study session to discuss limiting the number of drinking establishments in the downtown area. "We don't want to become another Aggieville or Westport," Commissioner Bob Schulte said. During discussion to waive a distance requirement for Kaw River Mercantile Co. General Store, 946 Massachusetts St., Schulte expressed concern with the number of drinking establishments that have opened in the downtown area. Most of the complaints were from people who had been verbally harassed by persons they thought were bar patrons, Schulte said. "it's a result of more people being in the downtown area," Schulte said. He was not against downtown having drinking establishments, Schulte said, but he wanted a balance between bars and retail stores. The store applied for a cereal malt beverage license and is within 400 feet of the United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St., which is a distance limitation. Commissioner Bob Moody said he wanted to approve the distance waiver because the establishment had applied for the waiver before the commission began discussing the limitation.
