This car was totaled in an alcohol-related crash. Due to alcohol use, the driver lost control and ran the car alongside a guardrail before crashing into a pole. The driver and passenger were under age 30. Neither one was wearing a seatbelt; the driver was thrown against the steering wheel and windshield. Both people were treated for injuries. Wrecked Car Supplied by Lewis Auto Salvage SOME SOBERING FACTS ABOUT DRINKING AND DRIVING FACT: Although teenagers comprise only 8% of the licensed driver population, they account for 15% of all drunk driver collisions and up to 42% of all fatal alcohol-related crashes. FACT: Your chances of being involved in an accident are 7 times greater if you have had a few drinks. FACT: About 65% of all Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related accident in their lifetime. One person is killed in these accidents every 20 minutes. FACT: On a weekend night, one in every four cars you pass is being driven by an alcohol impaired driver. One in every ten is driven by someone who is legally drunk (BAC 10). FACT: About 1 in 2,000 alcohol impaired weekend drivers will be arrested. One study reported that the average OUI driver will drive 80 times for year for nearly 4 years without being arrested. The车 will remain on campus all week, said Sue Sadecki, Kansas City, Kan., senior and president of KU's chapter of BACCHUS. Prevention of drinking and driving will be the focus of an alcohol awareness week sponsored by a national alcohol-awareness group and the Student Assistance Center. by Candy Niemann Kansan staff writer BACCHUS stands for Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students. through to the people who are pressured into drinking eight or 10 beers and then driving home." "We're not trying to scream at people and tell them not to drink beers because that is unrealistic," she said. "We just want to get She said the group would survey about 500 students and publish the results next week. Sadecki said that members of the CHUS would be conducting surveys on campus and handing out information about drinking and driving. Members of BACHCUS and KU faculty and staff also will attend the Board of Rogers Conference on Thursday and Friday in Wichita. Lorna Zimmer, director of the Student Assistance Center, said the conference stemmed from Gov Mike Hayden's campaign for a drug-free Representatives from all seven Regents institutions will attend the conference. They will discuss surveys conducted at the schools and ways each institution has attempted to boost alcohol awareness on campus, Zimmer said. Hayden will speak during a lunch on the conference, and Ed Hammond, president of Fort Hays State University, will be the keynote speaker. Zimmer said KU would compare a survey conducted last spring by the office of student affairs to surveys done by other schools. The KU survey found that 90 percent of 582 respondents said they either used alcohol or had used it in the past. "We want to share ideas on how to increase alcohol education," Zimmer said. --- *Is your eao big enough for the challenge? *Is your egregious behavior a priority?* *Want to lose yourself. . . your free time. . . your extra energy. . .* *Want to see a movie?
