Sirhan Sirhan apologizes

NEW YORK — Sirhan Sirhan, in his first television interview, likened his assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy to a死 killing Adolf Hitler, but went on to apologize repeatedly for the 1983 shaving.
Sirhan, who comes up for parole in May, called Kennedy his hero in the hourlong interview, which was shown to reporters yesterday and will be broadcast later this week. But he said he felt betrayed by Kennedy's support for Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

ROME — Two people have been arrested in Italy on charges of procuring classified military information for the Soviet Union, including documents on a computer system being developed for NATO, news reports said yesterday.

The arrests broke a KGB spy ring that sought to acquire top-secret documents on the computer system, which would help NATO nations direct activities on the battlefield and air operations, the reports said.
Milan's Corriere Della Sera said the operation was coordinated across the Yugoslav border by KGB agents apparently working without the knowledge of the Yugoslav government. The newspaper quoted unidentified sources as having one of the agents in Yugoslavia was a former Tass news agency correspondent in Rome.
"It could be the biggest counter-stepponage operation in Europe in recent years," said Rome's mass-circulation La Republica.

The reports said that the two men — a Yugoslav and an Italian — were arrested in northern Italy and that the Yugoslav was seized by police as he tried to drive across the border
with documents related to the computer system. The Italian may have obtained information on a NATO anti-submarine project, they said.
State-run RAI television said that the classified information was to have been sent from Yugoslavia to KGB agents in Austria.
Prosecutors and police confirmed that two people were arrested on espionage charges, but they refused to give any details.
The reports identified the suspects as Giorgio Stancich, an electronics technician who lived in Yugoslavia and worked in Italy, and Natalino Francalanci, a fur dealer from Ponteardo, near Pisa.
Stancieh, 42, was arrested Thursday near the northwestern adriatic port of Trieste, the reports said, and Francalancii, 51, was arrested Feb. 11 in the northwest Ligurian port city of La Spezia.

Police raid Mandela residence

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Police raided the home of black activist Winnie Mandela yesterday and said they took fingerprints and found traces of blood. Four of her bodyguards were arrested.
Brig. Gen Jaap Joubert, who is heading the investigation into the death of a 14-year-old black activist who was allegedly abducted and beaten at the house, said the fingerprints and blood samples would be tested.
Police also took bags of clothes belonging to her bodyguards, four of whom were arrested.
More than 20 policemen with rifles surrounded and guarded the house during the eight-hour search.
Joubert, who directed the search, is also investigating the disappearance of two young men last seen in the company of Mandele's bodyguards in November, and the slaying of a Soweto doctor who is reported to have seen the 14-year-old boy after he was beaten.
