14 Friday, February 17, 1989 / University Daily Kansan A matter of inches After surveying near the Campanile, John Johnston, Easton junior, Amy Pinnick, Kansas City, Mo., freshman, and Cindy Biller, Westerville, Ohio, freshman, end the day. The engineering students spent yesterday determining elevations. Teammates live, compete together by Cynthia L. Smith Kansan sportswriter A freestyle Alaskan ran into a sunny California when Kansas freshmen Matt Beard and Bruce Jackman moved into Templin Hall last fall. Because the roommates are newcomers to the Kansas track team, they have helped each other adjust to collegiate athletics. heard said they got along better because their schedules were similar and they understood each other. "I still feel intimidated," Jackman said. "But when you're nervous and intimidated, doing well always helps." Kansas track Coach Gary Schwartz said Jackman did well They keep each other on track when he placed eighth in the long jump with a leaf of 23 feet, 6 inches at Nebraska last weekend. "He had not been doing well until Nebraska." Schwartz said. "We had been wondering whether or not to take him." Schwartz said Jackman was talented but undertrained at Kenai High School in Kenai, Alaska, where he was born and reared. Both Beard and Jackman will test their skills at the Kansas State Open at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Bramble Lake Coliseum in Manhattan. Beard, from Hesperia, Calif., said that he liked living with a teammate because their schedules were similar but that Lawrence was different than he anticipated. the interaction. "When I came to Kansas, I was expecting flat — flat like in the movies," he said. Bear said he decided to enroll at Kansas anyway because the team was known for a strong pole vaulting program. He also said that he admired Kansas assistant coach Rick Attig, the 1988 Olympic pole vaulting coach. "When changes in the pole vaulting techniques come up, he (Attig) knows about them or they come from him," Beard said. Attig said Beard had jumped outdoors in high school and had difficulty adjusting to indoor competition. "One of the things that kind of held him back for a while that he was used to jumping with a pretty strong tail wind." Attig said. Beard vaulted $17_{34}$ at Hesperia High School. This season, his best vault was 15-6 at the Missouri Invitational on Jan. 28 in Columbia. He said he became frustrated this week during practice but senior pole vaulter Cam Miller advised him to relax and have fun. reks and trouble. "I (Miller's advice) took a lot of pressure off practice and turned things around, I think." he said. Hershiser becomes highest paid player with new 3-year,$7.9 million contract - Continued from p. 13 with the Dodgers set several records; ■ including a prorated share of the $1.1 million signing bonus, Hershiser will make $2,766,667 this season, the highest salary of any player, exceeding the $2,466,667 of Baltimore's Cal Ripken. Hershiser's raise of $1,666,657 broke the record of $1,328,442 set on to's Jimmy Key. Hershiser's average annual salary of $2,633,333 broke the record of $2.5 million on Wednesday by Boston right hander Roger hander Roger Clemens. HERSHIESER Hershiser would get $3,166,667 in 1991, including a prorated share of the signing bonus, making him the first $3 million baseball player unless someone beats him to it in 1990 "I'm glad that it's over with," Hershiser said at a Dodger Stadium news conference. "Deep down, this is what I wanted, to remain a Dodger. I think it's going to be fantastic. I can concentrate on baseball. I won't have to worry about free agency. "I am relieved I'll be playing for the team I want to be playing for. Once it was all said and done, I'm back to being warm and goosey albeit being a Dodger. That's what I wanted the whole time." Hershiser had said during negotiations that if a long-term agreement wasn't reached, he would leave the Dodgers after this season, when he would have become eligible for free agency. again. "In the back of my mind, I knew that was a possibility." Hershiser said. "I viewed this as a family decision, a business decision. I'm very happy the way works worked out. I was fully reconciled to the fact that a hearing was a possibility. "Although I was resigned we were going to arbitration, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. You have to go to negotiations to see what you’re worth." Clemens was the highest paid player for only a day. But Hershiser will have the distinction until at least next winter, unless another player renegotiates. "It really doesn't feel any different," Hersiser said. "Of course, we're going to be able to pay the bills very easily. It feels like its time to go to spiritual training. It's been a year and we've given what with all we've been through." been through the pitcher pitches and catchers reported yesterday to the team's spring training camp at Vero Beach. Fla., and will work out for the first time today. Herssher said he would work out at Dodger Stadium today and fly to Vero Beach on Monday. "I'm very, very happy to hear that news." Lasarda said. "He is without a doubt one of the premier pitchers in baseball." Dodger manager Tom Lasorda congratulated Hershiser via a telephone hookup. The contract does not include any incentives in keeping with a Dodgers' club policy. As a concession, Hershiser agreed to the lockout language proposed by the owners' Player Relations Committee, which said he would not be paid during any owners' lockout in 1990. "The clear fact is we compromised that issue," said Robert Fralley, Hersheys's agent. "We did so because the contract is structured properly. We certainly didn't intend for it to be portrayed as a moral issue. I think both of the parties at all times had a high degree of motivation to get together and sign this contract." Hershiser and the Dodgers were to go before arbitrator Stephen Goldberg yesterday. But when it came time for the parties to start, they kept on talking. Some 75 minutes later, they had an agreement. Emerging from the hearing room, Herssimer smiled and said, "Yeah, we're happy. It worked out. I had to go to the doctor. I'm going to be a Dodger for a while." "It took time," said Claire, the "general manager." The end result is what all of us wanted. At all times, he commanded to talk; we didn't close doors. Hershiser was seeking $2.425 million in arbitration.
