Dearth of nominations could thwart election But as of Wednesday, which was the deadline for nominations, only 12 had been received. one person holding this card is a Starving Student and is entitled to a $15 discount on any purchase of more than $2. University Council, Senate's executive body, is made up of 39 faculty members and 12 students. The committee is Council's executive body. Bob Jerry, SenEx chairman and Council member, said SenEx would be considering ways to solicit more nominations. Signature When enough nominations are gathered, ballots will be sent to all faculty members. The ballots will be counted at the April 6 SenEx meet Signature Good hour at 207 W, 23rd St. Lawrence, HS (749-6501) Attendee Record In the past year, Council has made recommendations to the chancellor and to SenEx on such issues as the park board report and the discontinuation of the personnel administration major. James Seaver, professor of history, said that this was the first time that faculty had shown little interest in University governance. "Back in the '70s, when people were bombing the campus and the Kansas) Union burned down, there was a lot of interest in Internet." "There was a crisis every day, and people wanted to take a stand. "But it has been quiet for the past few years. In these times, it doesn't seem too excited." Nomination forms were sent to all KU faculty members on Feb. 1. Of the approximately 1,200 applications sent, only 12 were returned. Faculty members nominate Council members by returning a petition with five faculty members' signatures. All faculty members who have not served recently on the Council are eligible to be nominated. One third of all faculty awards are up for election each year. Jerry, professor of law, said he thought one reason faculty members did not get involved was the time commitment required. "In my opinion, more faculty should take a serious interest in governance," he said. "Council does a lot of important things. For instance, right now, we are discussing faculty salary allocation. For that reason alone, I would think people should get involved." TOPEKA — Police questioned Ellen in a hospital emergency room, and within minutes local radio stations were broadcasting a description of the gunman she said could kill her if she did not open a safe. Seaver, who has been involved in University governance since the 1970s, said, "It takes time to be on Council. Faculty members also have to think of their own futures. If they are seeking tenure or promotion, they need a lot and not a way to get it. They spend their time in teaching and research." Sandra Zimmars-Swartz, associate professor of religious studies, said she thought that faculty members avoided getting involved because of her own lack of leadership. Council really had on policy and decision-making at the University. He wore a tan jacket, a blue polo shirt and red Puma tennis shoes. He also had a tooth with a gold crown, listeners of Topeka's five radio stations were told. Ellen said the man had hit her on the back of the head before fleeing without taking any cash. A black man, about 5-foot-10 with a goatette, had demanded money from Ellen, a nursing home receptionist, who didn't want her last name used for fear her assailant could identify her. Interrupting programming to broadcast suspects' descriptions and other information on armed robberies is part of a program called Radio COP begun by the police. The officers are asked to call police if they see a suspect or can provide other tips. "I wish University governance would be more excited," she said. "I wish people would stand up and take a position." Radio COP airs suspect description The Associated Press "Most crime prevention programs are reactive. This is proactive," said Sgt. Richard Johnson, who developed Radio COP, which stands for Call Our Police. As of yesterday, descriptions of five armed robberies had been broadcast, at an average of eight minutes after the crime was reported. No suspects have been arrested as a result of the broadcasts. Johnson said, but police were pursuing one tip.
