THOMPSON RELEASED: Suspended Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson was released into the custody of his mother yesterday while he awaited trial on a charge of selling cocaine to an undercover FBI agent. Thompson, making his second court appearance since his arrest, Monday night, waived his right to a preliminary hearing. The U.S. attorney's office waived its request for a detention hearing because of what it said were Thompson's strong ties to the area. Prosecutors were willing to release Thompson on certain conditions, one being that he confined his travel to the court's Western District of Oklahoma and the Northern District of Texas, which would cover his hometown of Lawton, Okla., and the Dallas home of his mother, Willie Jean Yarborough. Thompson also must submit to drug screening, actively seek work and report regularly to the probation office in Oklahoma City. In addition, he was barred from possessing a firearm or alcohol or drugs during his release. He also was required to post 10 percent of $10,000 bond, or $1,000. BURSON HOSPITALIZED: Ohio State guard Jay Burson has been hospitalized with a neck injury he apparently suffered during Monday's game against Iowa, university spokesman Steve Snapp said yesterday. Burson, a senior who is the Buckeyes' leading scorer, suffered a fracture of the fifth cervical vertebra and has been taken to Ohio State University Hospitals for tests, Snapp said. The injury does not involve the spinal cord, Snapp said. KU softball team opens season - Continued from p. 9 the jayhawks. "Our team is ready for it. Our ability to work together is probably our greatest strength." Playing outside for the first time in four months will be a relief for the Jahwacks, she said. "The team has been practicing in Anschutz (Sports Pavilion), but that's not the same." Alvarez said. "We can be a big step for us to play outside." Haack said he entered Kansas in the tournament because it was important for the team to play nationally ranked competition. He said it would give the Jayhawks the experience they needed to prepare them for the Big Eight Conference championships in May. "Our team is very young this year; we've got 10 new players and only five returning." Haack said. "The girls are prepared mentally, but it's early in the season. We need to play a lot of tough teams before May." He said the best teams in the Big Eight this year were third-ranked Oklahoma State, 10th-ranked Iowa State and 14th-ranked Nebraska. 106 DAY Today Only Until 8:30 p.m. Women's Shoes & Boots $10.06 $20.06 $25.06 $30.06 Men's Shoes $20.06 $25.06 $40.06 Children's Shoes $5.06 With any regular price purchase receive any pair of socks for $1.06 ARENSBERG'S SHOES All Polishes $1.06 OPEN SUN. 1:00-5:00 WEEKNIGHTS UNTIL 8:30 825 Massachusetts Downtown Lawrence Quality Footwear for the whole family since 1958 Free Topping when you order a large or medium frozen yogurt Expires March 21,1989 Expires March 21,1989 limit one per customer.
