Latin rock gets honor for group

LOS ANGELES — Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine won best pop-rock group at the 16th Annual American Music Awards, Gladys Knight and the Pips was named best rhythm and blues group and Alabama took its seventh country group trophy last night.
"I never expected to win this," said Eustafen, whose group is known for its Latin sounds. "It's wonderful to be able to cross over to a whole new market and to have everyone from all walks of life like our music."
Last night's awards were decided by 20,000 music lovers and were given out at a three-hour ceremony that was televised on ABC-TV.
Def Leppard and George Michael each got four nominations. Michael's album "Fath" has spawned six hit singles and scored on both pop and R&B.
Earning three nominations each were heavy metal bands Guns 'N' Roses and Van Haleen. Country music star Travis Baxter also earned three nominations.
Alabama won the country group trophy, defeating the Judds and the Oak Ridge Boys.
Correction
Because of a news clerk's error, "Woman and the Blues," an Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center program, was listed incorrectly in yesterday's calendar. The program is at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Pine Room at the Kansas Union.
