10 Mondav. Januarv 30, 1989 / University Daily Kansan KU grad describes relief efforts in Armenia by Alan Morgan Kansan staff writer Attempting to describe a natural disaster that left 500,000 people homeless, 130,000 injured and tens of thousands dead is not an easy task for Jeffrey Colyer. Colyer, a 1986 graduate of the KU College of Health Sciences, was aboard the first U.S. plane to arrive in Armenia after the earthquake on Dec. 7. Colyer arrived in the Soviet 70 hours after the earthquake. quake. Colyer said that the suffering he witnessed in Armenia could not have been communicated by the media. "The papers tried to capture the human suffering and the chaos," Colyer said. "But they couldn't connect the enormity of the devastation and the suffering it brought to thousands of ordinary families. "If the same quake hit Kansas, it would have left all of Wichita as casualties and everyone west of Topeka without a home." The quake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale. Colyer worked in two cities, including Lennakn, Armenia, which was the largest city affected by the quake. quake. "Leninakan was indescribable," Colyer said. "Tall apartment buildings were reduced to piles of rubble. Every corner had a stack of caskets six feet high. Hundreds of dazed people huddled around campfires or searched through the ruins." seer Riley said that although his team did not pull out many survivors, the Armenians appreciated U.S. aid in finding bodies buried in the rubble hiding bodies buried in the Colyer said the most frustrating moment for him came after the rescue of a 70-year-old man. "He was crushed and in shock," Colyer said. "An Armenian doctor performed CPR while a Soviet physician and myself started intravenous fluids, but we couldn't save him. All three of us were horribly frustrated that he died despite our combined best efforts." Colyer grew up in Hays and worked as a Soviet military analyst at the International Institute of Strategic Studies while he was attending medical school. Doug Eldred, spokesman for the Agency for International Development, the federal agency that administers U.S. disaster aid, said that Colyer's background in medicine and international relations made him a good candidate for the relief effort. nian region still is being helped by private sources. The U.S. relief effort was a combined force of private and governmental aid, Eldred said. "I think the Sovietis understood that this was purely a humanitarian mission." "As Americans, we were there to do a serious job and not play too much." He said the villages received firefighters and people built shelters out of hay bales.
