Campaign Kansas drive receives many donations
Gifts provide scholarships, student assistance

Campaign Kansas is a three-year drive that was announced last May to raise $150 million in private support for the University of Kansas. The following donations were made as part of the campaign:
- Peter Macdonald, retired chairman of Harris Enterprises, the parent company of 11 Kansas newspapers, has contributed $105,000 to establish the Peter M. Macdonald Visiting Professionals in Journalism Fund at KU.
The fund, in addition to helping classroom teaching for the School of Journalism, will support visits by professional journalists, newsmakers and news experts.
Macdonald has been a professional in residence and a visiting professional at the school. He attended the School of Business from 1945 to 1947 and has been active in the William Allen White Foundation.
A gift of $430,300 from the estate of Vergona Philip, a 1936 graduate of the School of Education, will be used to support the student loan program at KU. Chancellor Gene A. Budig said last week.
Philip established a trust naming the Kansas University Endowment Association as a major beneficiary.
The trust's terms specified that after Philip's death the trust's assets would establish the Verona Frevert Philip Student Loan Fund for deserving students at the University.
Philip died in 1987.
■ Fred W. Jameson of Topeka has established two $250,000 charitable remainder trusts at KU, Budig announced last week.
Jameson, a 1929 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, established the Fred W. Jameson Trust and the Jeanne Greever Jameson Trust. He named him for his wife, who also was a graduate from the College in 1931.
Jameson also said he selected charitable remainder trusts because this type of gift benefited both the donor and the University.
Income from charitable remainder trusts are paid to the donors or whoever the donors have chosen as life beneficiary. The trust's assets will pass entirely to KU after the donor's or the beneficiary's death.
Kansas City businessman Robert Riss and his family have given $670,000 to establish the Riss Family Award Fund, Budig announced Jan. 6.
The fund will be used exclusively to attract National Merit Scholarship winners to KU, especially from Kansas high schools, but will not be limited to Kansas residents.
KU, along with other Board of Regents schools, hopes the combination of strong academic programs and financial aid packages will stem the loss of promising Kansas high school graduates to out-of-state schools.

■ Emily B. Shane has donated $200,000 to establish the Presson Scott Shane Memorial Scholarship in memory of her husband, a 1941 KU graduate who went on to become an engineering professor.
Shane said that her husband's strong ties to KU prompted the gift.
Presson Shane, who died in 1987, graduated from KU with a degree in chemical engineering, and then received a master's degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Requirements for the scholarship fund specify that one scholarship be awarded each year to an incoming KU freshman who shows leadership, scholarship and responsibility. Preference will be given to students who are interested in engineering. The scholarship will be awarded to scholars each year. The scholarship is renewable for each year of the students undergraduate careers.
The first Shane scholarship of $4,000 has been awarded to Kenneth McRae, Junction City freshman.
A $500,000 gift establishing the R. Charles and Mary Margaret Clement Memorial Fund will benefit the Carved of Art, Bud Giugno impersonated Dec. 26.
The fund was established by the three sons of R. Charles and Mary Margaret Cleverenger.

R. Charles Cleverenger served as a trustee for the National Endowment Association from 1963 to 1975. Cleverenger was president of First National Bank of Topeka, now Bank IV Topeka, from 1946 to 1971, and was chairman of the bank's board of directors until his death in 1975.
The gift will help the museum meet a 3-to-1 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
**Dean A. McGee, a petroleum executive from Oklahoma City, has donated $500,000 to KU to establish a museum of physics, Bada招留 last week.**
McGee, who received a degree in mining engineering in 1926, has received many honors: KU's Distinguished Service Citation in 1951, an honorary doctorate in engineering degree from the University of Colorado into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1958 and the Distinguished Engineering Service Award from the School of Engineering in 1981.
Ninety-four percent of the 73 employees of the Kansas University Endowment Association have pledged $82,176 to campaign Kansas, Jeff Davis, association treasurer and co-chairman of the KUEA Employee Campaign, announced Jan. 10.
