College students are not immune from AIDS," Simms said. By comparison, other studies indicate infection rates of four out of 1,000 prisoners, or 0.4 percent. Nationwide, researchers believe the infection rate is between 0.4 percent and 0.6 percent, or perhaps 1.5 million people. The government has estimated that 20 percent to 30 percent of those infected with the AIDS virus will develop AIDS within five years. "This number was not unexpected," Simms said. "We knew that there was HIV infection among this population. This just confirms what we already knew, and in fact the final results in February may be higher or lower.
