Frederick moved from his Williams Fund directorship in 1985 to become athletic director at Illinois State. After two years there, Frederick got the opportunity to come back to his alma mater. In addition to his job as athletic director, Bob Frederick also helps with statistics for the Kansas Jayhawk Network. On Saturday he helped at the Kansas-Oklahoma football game in Norman, Okla. Frederick's wife, Margey, said that returning to Kansas was very special to her husband. "Because of our emotional attachment here, it was certainly a dream for him to come back as athletic director," she said. David BrandiKANSAN "We both went to school here, and he coached here. This is where we met. We were married in Danforthe wild hills, and I told him many special memories for us." His return to Kansas, though, also has meant many hours away from home. "Bob gives his all to the job," she said. "But we can deal with that. "I was in the emergency room with him the Sunday he had his bicycle accident, and he was back in the hospital. I just just the nature of his personality." Chancellor Gene A. Budig recognized Frederick's talents several years ago. In 1981, while searching for a replacement to athletic director Bob Marcum, Budig sat down with Frederick, who was then directing the Williams Fund, and told him he could one day become an athletic director. Budig told Frederick that he needed to establish strong relationships with coaches and academic administrators, become involved in professional organizations and complete his doctoral degree. Bush not bothered by narrowing lead KU Looking back, Budig said that appointing Frederick to be the athletic director in 1987 was good for PHILADEL- PHIA - Vice President George Bush yesterday shrugged off recent polls showed a narrower over Democratic rival Michael Dukakis and said "I believe Dr. Frederick will make a lasting contribution to the University of Kansas," he said. "These have been difficult times. He's made an unusual sacrifice to be the director of athletics at KU. He is very close to his family and he has been away for a while during periods. He has had to pay a very high price. Again, this underscores the commitment he has to the University." The Associated Press an interest in hiring him as athletic director. Frederick is committed to seeing the end product of his decisions. That is one reason why he did not even watch the final show when a Big Ten institution expressed he would campaign harder than ever in the final week before the Nov. 8 election. Asked why the polls showed his once double-digit advantage over Dakuski appeared to be eroding, Bush replied, "I don't think they are, and I'm not going to say any more about it." The GOP nominee spoke briefly to reporters outside the residence of Roman Catholic Cardinal John Krol, where he attended a private Mass with his wife, Barbara, and grandson, George P. Bush. "Frank Broyles (president of the organization of the 105 Division I-A athletic directors) said that 10 years ago, the percentage of job change of athletic director was six percent." Frankuck said. This past year, it was 39 percent. The turnover of AD's is now almost as high as basketball and football coaches. "I think it's to be expected as you get to the final days of the campaign that you're going to see some tightening in this race, but that's going to cause us to work harder. We'll not allow ourselves to lose the edge we've had as a campaign team." Fuller said. Bush's chief of staff, Craig Fuller "But I'm not interested in leaving at this point. I'm not looking for opportunities." "I think we expected the gap to close. We always thought that some of the polls that showed wide margins to be a little bit exaggerated, a little bit higher than some of our own numbers," he said. Frederick has accepted that he will be evaluated on the performance of two men he hired, basketball coach Roy Williams and football coach Glen Mason. On a light campaign day in the Philadelphia area, Bush told a crowd of supporters outside suburban Montgomery Bush Quay-Table headquarters that he would continue to campaign at full steam. said the campaign had expected all along to see a tightening in the numbers and was not alarmed by the latest apparent shift toward Dakikas. "From now on it's get out that vote. As for Barbara and me, we're going to keep running like we're 10 points behind. "The reality of almost all athletic directors' jobs is that you can have a successful broad-based program, attract good people and graduate student-athletes." Frederick said. "But if you don't have success on the football field and the basketball court, you're not a success. As the man overseeing about 100 administrative employees and 400 athletes at KU, Frederick keeps a "My job as athletic director is to allow the coaches to be as successful as they can possibly be. I'm committed to the people I've hired." rapid pace in merely performing his dav-to-dav duties. "I have a goal of going out at 10:15 every day and visiting some place different in the building," he said. "I haven't done very well on that. A lot of times there are pressing needs that have to be addressed, and I look up and it's 12:30 and I haven't been out of the office."
