Two share lead at PGA event

SOTOGRANDE, Spain — U.S.
Masters champion Sandy Lyle of Scotland and British Open winner Severiano Ballesteros of Spain each had seven birds en route to 4-under pair 685 yesterday and shared the opening round lead in the $963,000 Volvo Masters golf tournament.
Englishman Roger Chapman and Ove Sellberg of Sweden, who had 71s, were the only other players among the 80 leading members of the PGA European tour to break par on the road. That was because which was made even more difficult by tricky westerly winds off the Strait of Gibraltar.
Because of the terrain and the makeup of the course, which also features slick and undulating greens, Lyle said the eventual winner of this European tour finale would come from a small list of players who have had experience on the U.S. tour. That
would include England's Nick Faldo and Ian Woosem of Wales, but both began shakily. Faldo with a 74 and Woosam a 75.
"The course and the greens are so American that I can only see someone who has played in America and played well in the past to win this," said Lyle, who ranks third on the U.S. money winning list this year. He includes the Bowers and Greater Greensboro Opens and the Masters.
"At least that's the way I would bet if I was a betting man because you need that type of experience on such a course in Europe," he said.
After an outward 34 with three birdies, Lyle birdied the 10th hole to go 3-under-par, but dropped shots at the 12th and 15th holes.

Michael Allen of San Francisco was the top U.S. finisher with a 73, which tied him with six others in seventh place.
