Men's soccer club to go to nationals By Ken Winford Kansan sportswriter This has been a season of accomplishments for the Kansas men's soccer club. At 17-2, 2. Kansas has already clinched the league title and is quickly closing in on the 20-victory mark As league champions, the Jayhawks automatically qualify for the eight team national championship startting Nov. 11. The Jayhawks' top priorities when the season began were to win 20 games in the fall, finish first in the Midwest Collegiate Soccer League standings and quality for the National Collegiate Soccer Association Championship in Ames, Iowa. Kansas forward Toby Weasal said the Jayhawks would have to work even harder than before now that he had qualified for the national. "We set a goal a long time ago to make it to nationals." Weas said. "Now that we we've made it, we have to take our level of play up a step because every team at nationals is that much better. Starting this week, we need to prepare both teams physically for the tournament." The Jayhawks will play Sunday at Nebraska-Omaha and Nov. 5 at Joining the Jayhawks as one of the eight teams at nationals will be Illinois. Shirtliffe said either Wichita State or Iowa State would probably receive a wildcard invitation to the tournament. The injured players are: Fullback John Weist, sprained ankle; centerback Walter Wagner, twisted knee and ankle; left half Dave Stoneburner, pinched nerve in the neck; center midfielder Mark Glass, bruised leg; and midfielder Sean Holmes, turf toe. "Our ultimate goal is to win the tournament," Shirtliffe said. "Our next goal is to play well. If there is a better team there, we can't do anything about that. But I think we have the potential to finish somewhere in the top three or four teams." "Our biggest goal right now is to get everyone healthy." Shirtliff said. "We basically have two weeks to train for the tournament. We are in a strange position. We want to stay at the top of our game, and we have a lot of intensity, but at the same time we are trying to deal with injuries." ANNOUNCEMENTS College Financial Aid for Freshmen, Sophomores.
