University Daily Kansan / Friday, October 28, 1988 5 Computer scholarship search explored By Craig Welch Kansan staff writer Kansan staff writer Student Senate is researching a program that would computerize all available scholarship information to simplify students' search for financial aid. Brook Menees, student body president, said current methods of finding scholarships were tedious and time consuming. By developing a computer program, Senate could offer students a questionnaire that would connect them with appropriate financial aid possibilities. "There is a 4 or 5-inch thick book of scholarships for the financial office, if you like it," said Thomas. "The books get in your get." Smith said that she had developed a written proposal for the program as a starting point. Buffie Smith, Wichita senior and member of the University Affairs Scholarship Search Program, said eventually the program could deal with other types of financial aid. The search group is concerned primarily with scholarships because the program may be incompatible with other types of "It (the program) would be accessible through the mainframe computer or by floppy disk" according to the written proposal. "It will follow a yes/no, true/false, multiple choice format. The program will automatically eliminate scholarships that students aren't eligible for based on their answers to certain questions." their answers. Smith said that the program could be developed from scratch but that she would rather modify an already existing program. we would like to find some existing software," she said. "It would make things a lot easier and much more efficient. Anytime you design a new program, you're going to have bugs. The actual program, we hope, would be user friendly, user accessible and not highly complicated." Jeff Weinberg, associate director of financial aid, said that if the program were financially feasible, the University should consider adopting it. S Smith said that financing for the project had not been determined. Until the research is finished, the project will be funded. "I think it's a really positive program, one that absolutely bears serious investigating," he said. Audrey Castillo, Kansas City, Kan., sophomore and co-chairman of the Student Financial Aid Advisory Board, said her committee was beginning to research the program. The committee has contacted to peer institutions, such as Iowa State University, to find out how to best utilize the program. "We're trying to find out how much it would cost, how to get the project started and how to make it Placement of the finished program also would be important for students to get the most out of it, she said. workable," she said. "Initially we'd have only one computer," Casillo said. "Eventually, though, we'd like to see one in each residence hall, one in Wescoe and maybe one in the Kansas Union."
