Both earned their way onto the Kansas team the hard way — as walk-onss. Both were redshirted their first year and both have made steady improvement in their games since joining the team. Kansas sophomore tennis player Jeff Gross practices at the tennis courts behind Allen Field House. Gross won three matches at the Volvo All-American tournament in Athens, Ga., last week. This year, Gross, an Overland Park parkhomore, and Rangel, a Monterrey, Mexico, freshman, have something else in common. When the Kansas spring tennis season begins in January, both figure to be key players. Jayhawks plans for their third string Eight Conference championship. Both Gross and Rangel proved they could compete nationally last week with strong showings at the Volvo All-American tournament in Athens. Gross, who won last year's No. 6 singles championship at the conference tournament, wore three straight doubles titles in his first game from the pre-qualifier to the qualifier. He was defeated in the qualifier by the University of Southern California's Byron Black. Rangel, who sat out last season as a redshirt, won two matches in the pre-qualifier before losing to Cunningham, who played a tough three-set match. 4.6, 7.5, 6.4 Kansas tennis coach Scott Perelman said Gross and Rangel had worked hard to improve their games. impressed with the dramatic turn around in Rangel's play "I am very pleased with the progress Jeff and Rafael have made," he said. "Jeff is getting better all the time. Coming all the way through the pre-qualifying round is a tremendous improvement from the other players and coaches at the tournament was that Gross is ready to compete on that level." Perelman said he was most "I tinkled for Rafael because for the longest time he didn't look like he could play his way out of a paper bag," Perelman said. "Now, I hone my skills and am outstanding college tennis player. I excited about his future." "That was our last tournament of the fall, so it was important to do well," Gross said. "We've been working hard this fall and I believe it really paid off for me. In a couple of situations, I felt like I worked harder and better in better shape. It made a difference. His strong performance at the Volvo All-American tournament was something Gross said he hoped he could build on in the spring. Kansas' spring season begins Jan. 4 at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Rangel said he would use the break to work on his mental toughness. "I'm playing well overall right now, but mentally I could do better." Rangel said. "In general, I need to work on my concentration and get mentally tough. We have a long season, but its difficult for me right now when we don't have a match until January." While some teams might use the winter break from active competition as a rest period. Perelman said the Jayhawks would use that time to improve. "We are going to continue to work hard every day," Pereiman said. "This is a time when we can hopefully get ahead of everyone else. We have three months before the start of the spring season. Our goal is to be three months better than we are today." At 15th & Kasold the Orchard's Corners Shops offer you one stop shopping for all of your HALLOWEEN needs.
